In the wake of Katrina a couple of friends and I were discussing what the heck we would do with our gun collections if a disaster was bearing down on us. If you had to evacuate what would you do with your guns if you could do anything at all?

This is probably a selfish statement, but I would be alot more worried about my familys safety than any of my guns, I dont think I own a single gun that couldnt be replaced with a like one, but I would in the event I had to evacuate take a handgun to protect my family and myself with. JIM

Guns are inert objects. In a face of disaster I would be sorry to loose them. But to loose any one from my family would devastating. My loved ones are not replaceable guns are.

My guns are insured. Some of them are not replaceable because of sentiment. Those and some of the higher priced ones can be evacuated along with the most important thing my family. We don't have huricanes in Oklahoma. And if a tornado ripps my safe out of the slab I probably wont need any guns no more. Seeing as my safe room is bolted down next to it.

TM7, Sorry you lost your boat and other things. You are right nobody has a monopoly on family piety. My family does come first with me and personal things last. I have no plans for my personal things. They can be replaced. You might ask the people that just went through Hurricane Katrina and they might have the answer that might help you. Carl L

Mine would be going with me -- 2 reasons --EVERY family member will have one for protection and no looter will be using them to rob-rape or kill some poor innocent person at my hand

In this disaster, an array of guns might well become barter for other goods of trade. I don't know if my 660# safe could withstand a 20' wall of water. Doubt it sincerely - just another anchor.

On the other hand, with space being at a premium, I doubt the wife would tolerate too much of the collection in tow when other essentials might be required. Hard to say in advance of a storm. No previous storm has been as destructive. After this one, the decisions of the future will be quite different.

I live in an area that will not flood. If I made the decision to leave (not at the last minute either!), I can bury the ones I won't take in enough blankets and plastic to protect them for the duration. Main thing is to get them covered and away from prying eyes.
Living alone means no other close family to worry about in my household. I know my father wouldn't leave his house - he's made that known before. His choice.
My house can be replaced - I'd still have the land to come back to. Still, a prudent man takes care to protect his posessions as much as possible.
If necessary, I can sell the guns later to help fund a new house or car.
Selfish? IMHO, just good planning.
