7/30 vs 30/30
« on: August 31, 2005, 06:22:12 AM »
hello all,

I thought I was set on the 30/30 but I am asking one more time which do you use and why?  I have dies and brass for the 30/30 (I have a marlin already)  but I want a up to 200 yard deer/black bear rifle what is my best option of the two.  also if you have any favorite loads for them let me know!!

thanks

Carl

Because you can load either with SP or similar bullets there is very little difference and both will work for your 200 yd. limit. I prefer .284" bullets and I have a 7-30 Waters...some guys don't like to handload and prefer the 30-30 because factory FN ammo is available everywhere.

since you already have 30-30 dies it's a harder call but i had 21" barrels in both & sold the 30-30 barrel..the 7-30 is slightly more powerful and more flexable.. i use 140 gr sierras in the fall & 100 gr sierra hpts the remainder of the year..but it is very hard to find 7-30 brass much less ammo while 30-30 is everywhere.. 7-30 barrels are custom shop only while 30-30 can veordered from midsout & will arrive in 2 days.

I have a 30-30 barrel . The ammo is easy to come by and as you reload some 100 to 150 grain ammo is easy to reload. Looking at loading some 130 Barnes SSTs for deer hunting. Should be faster and flatter shooting than round nose factory ammo.

I have had both in carbines and I have to say the 7-30 was a lot harder hitting with 120's than the 30-30 was with 130's. The 30-30 did kill one deer, dead as a door nail...
