Need new rifle? 25-06, 270, or 300 wsm!
« on: August 31, 2005, 11:35:41 AM »
I just purchased a 500s&w handi rifle and should be getting it in 2 weeks.
Any thoughts on this cartridge. I want 1 big bore and I just sold my 243 and I am looking for something with that is a good all around caliber.
I am fond of the wsm cartriges and like the  25-06, 270, and 300.
which one would you pick and why?

I plan on hunting deer, hog, and hopfully bear one day. I feel the 300 has the best potential and I will also be reloading! Thanks!!

:D If you don't have a safe full of choices it is smart to evaluate the type of hunting you will be doing, place and size of game and buy one gun to fill all the voids.  Of the three you mentioned, I think the 30-06 is the best choice.  You can reload ammo up or down to suit your needs, brass is fairly easy to come by and if you need to purchase ammo even the most out-of-the-way places will normally stock 30-06.

That says it all.  When you throw bears(Black Bears that is) into the mix then the .270 WSM is the minimum and the .300 WSM a much better choice.  Although I love and use the .25-06 and have taken a Black Bear with it I don’t recommend using one for Black Bears.  Lawdog

25-06

I chose the 25-06 for a several of reasons. 1st I was going to have targets past 100 yards. 2nd I was going to hunt White Tail, Mule Deer, Antelpoe and Prairie dogs. 3rd I wanted a flat shooting point and shoot rifle with very little recoil.

My Ruger 25-06 has filled the bill very well, taking all of the above mentioned game with single shots using 100 grain bullets. Big game from 65- 350 yards, PD's out to just over 500.

The way I look at it, the .25-06 is enough for bear but as lawdog said, I wouldn't recommend it, the .300 is plenty for bear and whitetail, but might be a bit much on hogs? The .270 sits in there for enough for everything, without being too little or too much, plus if your reloading you can get them as hot as you want to fit your game. But the same goes with the.300, go with what you think you will be comfortable shooting.
Good luck  :D

300 wsm overkill for deer I think. 7mm-08 and 25-06 about ideal........use my 270WSM if I think it's going to be a 350 yards plus shot....though 25-06 would do fine for that too.
