Reading your tomatoes

Just out of curiosity . . .

What is going on when you get a circular like scaring going around the stem of your tomatoes?

Does vertical cracking mean too much moisture?

Thanks,

Long.

Longwinters,

This link may help you.  What you describe is commonly called "Catfacing"
You are right when you blame wet weather, but that is usually only part of the problem.

It happens to almost everyone and probably doesn't hurt the Tomato other than the appearance.  Cutting out the scars from Catfacing and using the Tomato for sauce or other prepared food is also a common practice in my house.

Here is the link with pictures.

Cracking can be caused by having a dry spell and then having a good rain or watering. the plants take up the sudden jolt of moisture quicker than the skin can grow and results in a crack.
