TO BULL OR NOT TO BULL

Hi guys, I have decided to buy a new H&R ultra rifle in .243 cal..  It comes in standard 22" or a 24" bull barrel.  I plan to use it primarily for deer hunting and coyote hunting.  Do you think that I should go for the bull,( it is only about $10 more) or does the extra weight overshadow the bull's benefits?

First off ..Welcome to GrayBeards :D
Personally I love bull barreled rifles. I like the heaviness and strength of them. The weight it's self doesn't bother me too much, so I have no qualms with that. If you are going to be on the move a lot though, I would suggest the standard weight. What do you prefer?

Welcome to GBO!! :D  What myarmor said, I prefer the 24" bull over the standard 22" barrel anytime I have the choice!! :agree:

Thanks for the welcome and the quick response.  I have never owned a bull barrel rifle, but I did like the way it steadied quickly when shouldered at the gun shop.  Will the bull barrel be more accurate?

It will be stiffer and therefore has the potential to be more accurate. It also won't heat up as fast and the .243 definately can use any help it can get against heat! :wink:

From what I have found, usually. But not always. Again the strength and solidarity of a bull barrel is great.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I think I will go for the bull barrel model.  I have a new Sightron SII 3-10x50 that I am dying to mount on something, (wouldn't fit on my Savage 110 7mm mag) and I think it will fit just fine on the H&R.  Hey any easy tricks to helping the trigger out,  the one at the gun shop broke at about 25 lbs. (just kidding).

Bsnelling1:  While I own own both bull and standard barrel and like both. I try to take into account what it will be used for when concidering barrel contour. For stand hunting, the bull barels are no. 1, while if walking or still hunting is it's intended use the standard gets the nod. While bull barrels are just the ticket for bench, varmite, and stand hunting, to me at least they seem heavy and ill balanced when carried for any distant. I once had a .280 Remington, 26" that I sold for just that reason. Either will do a good job for you. Good Luck, and Shooting:  :grin: <>< Duce:

Welcome aboard! Pull up a chair, kick up your feet, and stay awhile.

As far as your choice goes....the bull barrel can be a bit to carry if you're waling all day. If you plan to set up and wait for them i would go with the bull. All of the 243s are pretty well accurate. The superlight barrel is the only one that has a spotted record.

    Standard barrels for hunting..............Bull barrels for varmint and
    heavy range shooting. IMO.  Plus, i don`t want to carry any more then i have too.

My Bull 243 is much more accurate  than my Synthetic SS243.which is the worst of my 10 Handi's

The only centerfire H&R I have is an old .44 mag Shikari, which has a fairly heavy barrel..
 
     I do have the sportster with 3 barrels however...22 LR, .22 mag & .17 HMR...The HMR is the only bull barrel,and compared to the others, it points, holds and "lays in there" better than the other ones.
 
   BTW..the HMR is much more accurate ...but this may just be the inherent difference between rounds, although I really do think the bull helps me "hold on target" better..

Standard or Bull...I'll go with a bull barrel everytime in a Handi...if I could have a 26" bull barrel...that would be the next best thing...but...it won't happen for a while yet...I had the 24" Bull 243...it shot real good for me...and mitchell has it shooting itty biddy groups now :D
