Best/New BP Substitute Loads In Old TC Renegade 50cal??
« on: September 02, 2005, 02:02:35 AM »
I shoot a 25 year old scoped 50cal TC Renegade rifle and have always used 100 grs of FF blackpowder and a Hornady 240 XTP sabot.  This gun when fired from a bench will group about 4"-5" at 100 yards and will hammer any old whitetail.

I am curious if anyone has found any of the new black powder substitutes to be more accurate and efficient in one of these old side hammer slow twist guns?

While I am a BP person, (like it, nuff said)  I hear a lot of people remark on that 777 stuff.  There is a 15% reduction factor.

I always had very good results with Pyrodex RS when I shot percussions.

If you're not married to the sabot/240, you might try the following:

Oxyoke wonderwad over the powder
.018" TC prelubed pillow ticking patch
Hornady .490/180grn ball

Outstanding in my TC Hawkens
"Flintlocks.......The Real Deal"
(Claims that 1:48" twists won't shoot PRBs accurately are old wives tales!!)

Although my gun (cabela's version of a hawken .54 cal perc.) isn't all that old I switched back from 777 to BP.  I found my accuracy decreased and misfires increased with 777.

The reason I switched to 777 was because I wanted to get as many shots as I could thru the gun without brushing the barrel.  Lazy, I know.

Well I decided to go back to BP, plus there's nothing quite like the smoke and smell of BP.

Only problem is trying to find BP in Northern Co.

Triple 7 has worked quite well in my 54 caliber T/C Renegade.

I shoot a 25 year old scoped 50cal TC Renegade rifle,, ,, in one of these old side hammer slow twist guns?

Question? Are you sure the 1980 model Renegade is a slow twist? Some of the very early model T/C Hawkin/Renegade where a 1-60 twist. But, they began that 1-48  push in the late 70's /early 80's ?? :D

It does make a differance. (Sabot's in a slow twist?) It is worth-while knowing the twist rate of your gun. Some tymes it don't say it "stamped" on the barrel, and a guy just hast ta find out on his own. (truth)
i'm a realist. i've not seen it all, but man ,,I've Been Around the block once or twice

Dave 1 I shoot a T/C New Englander with 80 grns of 2f  T-7,I have shot as many as 30 times and never swabbed the barrel. IMO you cant go wrong with T-7. Around here where I live it is almost impossiable to find true B/P. I've never had any misfires with the T-7. I TO shoot with a scope it is a old redfield 4x. 5 shot groups at 50 yds are usally one ragged hole. try the t-7 you will not be sorry.

I am not absolutely sure of the twist rate of my gun but for some reason believe it is 1:48.  The slow twist rate may be the reason my groups with the Hornady sabot are not any tighter than they are.

It sounds like alot of folks are having good results using 777 loose powder in some percussion guns.  Are there any published velocity and trajectory information or personal reccomendations for using 777?  Any ignition problems using it in a percussion gun?  I may pick up a can of 777 and try it at the range.

Thanks, Dave

Dave1 I have never had any misfires with T-7. My New Englander Likes 80 grns with prb. Go to www.hodgdon.com click on data and then on muzzleloading, and it will give you the info that you need. If you will give T/C a call give them your serial # and they can tell you what rate of twist your barrel is. I would say that it is a 1-48. Happy shooting.
