Trying a new Bi-Pod method.....
« on: September 02, 2005, 07:46:42 AM »
I am a Bi-Pod shooter. My main game is Varmint shooting and Target
For my applications and hunting, a rifle isn't worth having unless I can shoot it off Bi-Pods.
So you can feel my frusteration I have had with the Handi rifle. Seeing that they are very pressure sensitive on the forearm.
I go to thinking, the Handi almost always shoots better when supported under the reciever..Why not move the Bi-Pod back as far as possibile on the forearm?
I looked in my cabinet and found an extra pack of Uncle Mikes sling swivel studs laying around.
So I went and got my drill and some bits, and an adjustable wrench. Drilled a hole about 1/2 to 3/4 and inch from the rear of the forearm. And screwed in the stud. I was afraid how it would look, but I like the way it turned out. It's very compact and the Bi-Pods don't extend past the end of the forearm.
I have cleaned and polished my bore, floated my barrel and I am off to my range today to see how it performs. I will come back with pics and keep you posted.
By the way I am taking my 30-06 UltraComp and my 223 bullbarrel.
I didn't know if anyone has tried this before, but I am guessing they probably have. But I haven't...so there

It's been talked about a couple times, but no one has tried it that I can remember. Someone mounted a stud to the forend screw recently, also.

Thanks for the feedback fellas, but  looks like my I will have to wait just one more day to try it out. Family is cutting hay at my range. Oh-well I'll be able to spend more time on it tommorow-Saturday-anyway, no distractions. And no worries about possilible odjects in my lane of shooting either...thats a very good thing, one less thing to worry about.
And after I try it out, crossing my fingers that this works, if I have time..... This is the second cut. Which means the little buggers will be crawling around everywhere in open sight.
Sounds like it all worked out for the best now that I think about it.
The neighbors should enjoy the peace tonight, for the air will scream tommorow

I couldn't wait. Yesterday close to getting dark, I went out and set a target. I didn't get a chance to fire off a whole lot, but got a few rounds out. Go to take out the 223 the most, and worked great!
My range is set for 120 yards, best group with the few shots I actully did take, was 1/2" with the WWB 45gr-to no ones surprise.
I am going out today for some real shooting and will post more on if the 30-06 likes it or not.

Gave me an idea, though my 22-250 shot good with the bipod at the front of the Chaote fore end, I can put it in the slot backwrds and it will move the bipod closer to the hinge pin..........will have to see what happens.......

Larry, I pointed that out in a couple of my posts on the fluted 22-250, it didn't help on mine.  I floated the barrel from the barrel screw forward hoping that would help, will report if I ever get to the range.

Pic of my range at home.

This one just because I like it

Yeah it's my grandfathers land. Just behind my house. He loves me cleaning out the ground hogs down there. So far me and my brothers=15 this year.
So he didn't mind us setting up a range down there. Very cool of him and I am greatful for him.

It's home.
I don't know what I would do/or where I would be without it.
Turns out that when I was trying to group my rifle when I got it mounted back there, one of the legs on the Bi-Pods worked loose-the left one was turnback and forth about a 1/2 inch. I found out that I had my brothers Pods   Somehow we go them switched. His don't fit as well on my rifle as do mine though, and I thought something was different.
I am not sure how many shots I took with it like that. So I have fixed the problem and will come back with some results.

Was very pleased with 22-250 and Chaote stock. Mounted bipod with hold down nut at front, shot high, but 1/2"groups. Also 1" groups with 45-70 and Choate stock. Recoil much less with the Choate......happy, happy, happy :-D

Way things are going, I should get a comission from Choate. I have 2 Fluted models with them, put one on my Bull Barrel 22-250 one on my 45-70 and replaced the Survivor stock on my 308 with one. Probably do my 7mm-08 and 44 mag too before I'm done. They may not be pretty to some, but they sure make my Handis shoot and reduce felt recoil.243's could be next too... :-D

I have always like Choate stuff.  The Ultimate Sniper stock is awesome, albeit big.
I personally like the tactical look, but I also appreciate a nice piece of crafted wood.
You can't have just one. What would the world be like if all you seen were wood stocked rifle, or all synthetic rifles? It takes all kinds.

Myarmor,

How does mounting the bipod in "your" spot affect the reloading of your rifle?  Does it make it easier? faster? a bit more "tactical"?  I would think that having the extra "holder in the hinge area would be a plus.

The two rifles I have shoot well from a bipod attached to the sling stud.
We have explained the reasons before why a Handi wont shoot from the bipod and do better when supported under the hinge pin.

From a pure accuracy point a reduction of distance between the two supports will increase the error induced by the shooter( shoulder movement). The closer the bipod is to the shoulder the greater the movent at the the end of the barrel.

If the bipod was at the center 1/2 to the shooter and 1/2 to the  end of the barrel.  A one thou movement by the shooter would move the barrel one thou in the opposite direction and would induce about one inch at 100yrds. You move the bipod back say 25/75 this would move the barrel
1.75 x one thou or nearly 2" at one hundred.

Of course if the distance to the shooter is greater than to the end of the barrel the error would be less.

Any way you look at it it is a poor system. Fix and bed your rifle to shoot from anywhere off the forearm.

So bedding the barrel in the right way can enable accurate fore-arm supported shooting?

This alone would not do it, I said fix too. All loose joints need to be tight and a stronger latch spring is needed. A well bedded forearm will do nothing if the latch moves or the action twists or the hinge piece is loose.

Read about it and study it. Why do you think   the rifles that Mac uses are so accurate he uses stronger latch springs and so do I. Guys get together and order 10 springs from Lee for $50 bucks. Quick knows all about it. For $6.50 a piece you save a lot of ammo.

Eh, I am off to go chasing geese. Wild goose chase :D See you later.

I'll check the link quick in a sec here but first i wish to share my bipod idea. Basically its take a folding bipod and instead of a stud mount, a vice grip made to fit the contour of the underside of the frame that holds be friction alone by clamping or just a slip on that could be slid on and off. I'm trying to think of a way to make a rudamentary prototype. It would 'feel' like the bench rests under the hinge but would stay on the rifle like a bipod.

Unless you have a solid support under the butt, the leverage affect that Fred pointed out would affect accuracy with the bipod that far back. From the bench, bags support the rear, but from field positions, the rear support wouldn't be as easy unless you use short rear cross sticks like some varminters use. So you would need to take that into consideration while you're brainstorming.
