My Encore...God's way of telling me I make too much money.
« on: February 26, 2003, 12:43:10 AM »
I bought an Encore in .454 Casull late last summer.   Of course I had to buy brass, dies, bullets, etc. in both .454 and .45 Colt.  Topped it with a Burris 1.5x4 scope.  Then I thought it might be nice to have a .22 cal barrel.  After another $325 I was the proud owner of a Virgin Valley .22 match barrel with rimfire conversion and a VVCG scope base.  Don't forget the $225 for the Leupold/Gilmore red dot scope.  Never one to know when I'm well off, I was perusing Ebay a short time ago.  Bad move.  After parting with $297 I'm now the owner of an Encore barrel in 6.5x55 Swede.  Whoops! It's a VVCG barrel with hanger system that won't fit the factory fore arm.  Out goes another $216 for a custom set of fore arm and grip (can't have an ugly factory grip with a pretty custom brown laminate fore arm) and a 6 screw base.  Mustn't forget $135 for a Bushnell Trophy 2x6 scope.  Brass and bullet, you say?  Does the Betty Ford Clinic have a section for T/C Contender and Encore owners?  Just Say No didn't work. :D

All I can say is NO S**T!! Got my Encore and had to get a back up. Bought a 7mm08bbl and 44 and 223 and 7mm bench, tried 250sav, 250sav imp. OK OK sold all those. Don't need two Encores sold one. Now have 7mm08 heavy bbl from fox ridge (I do like this caliber in this pistol) oh don't forget the .358 win, going hunting in Alaska send it to VVC to have it chambered out to 35/284 win. what a great combination!! oh yea going hunting in Canada possibly they don't allow handguns soooo just bought a 30/06 rifle bbl from Ed. and stock and forearm. Did I mention I picked up a used Contender sold the 357 herret that came on that bought a .22mag and .256 win mag oh that needs brass and dies and.... Did I mention my .257 Roberts bbl is coming in from Fox ridge any day for the Encore... and don't for get the burris leupold bushnell scopes that have to go with all that and stocks from boyds.
Talk about addiction...... Don't get me started....
But I wouldn't change a thing. Having great fun... Now what's Next Oh yea
That's right the G2 is due out argh &*&%^%*  Good shooting Jerry J

Reddot, how do you like that .454 Casull barrel?  I have one on the way and I've heard horrid things about the recoil, but what fun is gun that doesn't recoil, right?

YOU guys act there is something strange about this habit? I think it affects everyone who is normal! If you gatta have it, you got it! As for me? I had to promise myself to stop buying barrles after the next one. Too many to count, too much fun trying to decide which one is the next one!

I am now accepting any free contributions to the Selmer Encoraholic treatment center here in Iowa.  I run it out of my own home, it's a non-profit organization and you donation would be tax deductible.  Right now I'm accepting any Encore frames, barrels, or grips that you are willing to part with.  Other items that could help are cleaning kits or supplies, bipods and front rests.  We have a decent supply of protable bench rests, but we're always looking for more to help the afflicted deal with their addiction and shoot even more.  Any reloading supplies, i.e. brass, bullets, primers, and powder are also welcome.  I hope that you feel compelled to send donations out of the goodness of your heart, PM me for a shipping address so we can put your donation to work ASAP!

Ok, so I'm thinking that we start a not for profit organization and hire those guys who stand on the street corner with the dirty clothes and the Traveling Need Money signs and use the money for Contender and Encore stuff!!!!! Need to set up close to a Mission so that we can feed our help. Should get them some dogs at the dog pound and maybe a baby carrier(without the baby). I can furnish the dirt and the grease to smear on them when we sweep the floor in our truck repair shop. I'm sure that with all of the people on this thread we could put something like this together, maybe before we become one of thos guys standing on the corner with the sign.
My wife says that I'm compulsive!!! I am not sure what she means, but I have 5 barrels coming that I traded for and 4 scopes and I've only owned a Contender for about a month!!

My impression of .454 Casull recoil, as requested by Selmer
« Reply #7 on: February 26, 2003, 08:27:30 AM »
Well, in my opinion, the recoil would be classed as "stimulating", to say the least.  I have a friend who shoots a Contender in .444 Marlin, and he says the recoil from my .454 is "noticable", so I must not be imagining it.   Actually, it is more than I find to be fun.  I have shot his .375 JDJ and there isn't a whole lot of difference IMHO.  I had a load that launched a 250 gr Hornady at 1990 fps and I must say, that required a firm grip.  If you're one of those guys that eats habanero peppers right out of the jar, you may enjoy it.  Just my 2 cents worth. :money:

No habaneros for me, but I did get a set of Denzel Robert's Recoil Tamer grips, I'm hoping they help.  I'm also not a guy that necessarily needs or uses all of the horsepower available, but it's nice to know it's there when I want to use it, I don't plan on breaking the 1500-1600 fps mark with 250 or 300 grain bullets, I know that will still bite but it's not max, and will give me better brass life.

As far as I know there is no known cure for the T/C itis' disease's.  The best therapy is buy a barrel or two every now and then to ease the pain.

My buddy bought an Encore 209X50. What a beauty! All stainless with a 3-9 stainless scope and the black synthetic stock. I was so jealous. Then he found out he couldn't use it to hunt deer in our state. He told me he was getting rid of it. I said why not just get another barrel for it but he said they cost too much. So I took it off his hands. I guess they're  not too expensive for me.
I have a Contender with pistol and rifle stocks but no barrel you would think that I would do something with that but noooooo. I just couldn't pass up the Encore. I'm soooooooo happy.
I just hope my wife don't find out.
