30/06 15" loads
« on: February 26, 2003, 02:47:17 AM »
I just ordered a 15" 30/06 encore barrel.  Any one out there have any suggestions for bullets and loads.  The gun will be primarily used for deer and the occasional hog.  I'm thinking about  150g or 165g Barnes-X or similar type bullet with H4350 powder.  I'm not real sure of the barrel twist (haven't received it yet).  Would I be better off with a lighter bullet in this short barrel?  Thanks!

I just got my 15" Encore 30-06 barrel last week.  I don't know much, but Remington 180gr Core-Lokt print 1.5" groups at 100 yds from my unsteady/unpracticed hands.

Stratocaster,
The weight is about right but I would switch to Noslers to avoid the heavy copper fouling. The powder selection is ok but IMR4350 is probably a bit better. Be aware that the muzzle flash is going to be extreme and the recoil is going to be on the stiff side. (I'm glad I'm not the one holding on to it)

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

You made a good choice, I have a 15" '06 with no muzzle brake and I don't think recoil is that bad.I use only IMR4350.
58grs of IMR4350 with a 150gr NBT gave me the best group.I have also tested 58grs of IMR4350 with a 150gr Hornady SP groups are very good as well.I'm going to test some more with the Barnes X.I tested the Win. Fail Safes and got as good as groups with the Hornaday.I think the 150's are going to serve you well for Hog and deer.
