Barrel slugging
« on: September 03, 2005, 03:13:34 AM »
 I hope to start reloading for my H&R 38/55 Target rifle (when I get it). I have not reloaded rifle shells before, and I'm reading the Lyman reloading book. They say you should slug your bore. I take it that they mean to find out the actual diameter. Is this correct?,and how do I do this? Thanks for any info on this. - Gordy.

They really mean drive a lead slug through your barrel

Midwayusa.com has a slugging kit and I think Brownells does too.

What you do is take a straight lead slug and lube it up like crazy.  Then you drive it through you bore.  Now at this point there are several thoughts on the way to do this:
1. from throat to muzzle all the way
2. muzzle to throat, all the way
3. a few inches in from the throat and then go from other end to drive it back out
4. a few inches in from muzzle and then drive back out from receiver.

If you have soft bullets you don't need a kit but hard ones really are suited for this.  Use a wooden dowel so you don't damage your bore.

And do several so you can compare--with only one if something was "wrong" with the lead then you don't have correct data.

hope this help
