35gr V-Max in a .223 Handi?
« on: September 03, 2005, 07:08:43 AM »
Has anyone tried  Hornady 35gr V-Max bullets in a .223 Handi?  How has accuracy been?  I have a chance to pick up a couple boxes, but I have no experience with this light of a bullet in the .223.

Also, what are some good powders for this bullet weight?

The lightest my HB 223 likes is the 52s , anything lighter looks like a shotgun pattern.  :x

My Ultra likes the 40-55gr bullets, and seems partial to anything under 52gr. I use Varget with 50gr Nosler BT's, and have had excellent results. I'm thinking the 35gr V-Max would be a real screamer at high velocities, considering the slowish twist of these rifles.

I shot some in a 1 in 17 twist 22-250 and they made 4,400fps with IMR 3031.  The shot well but not as well as the 40gr Barnes VLC's.  Larry

My 223 will only shoot the 40 moly Vmax's and nothing else. I'm sure thinking about trying the 35's though. Digger

I played with these in my Number 1.  The 35's are so short and stubby that they were really far off the lands when loaded.  I had to settle on the 40's which are really fast and quite devestating!

If you want some real fun try the 30gr Berger MEF's, they are as long as a 40gr Barnes and shoot really good as well as being extremely fast.  They will make 4,500fps out of my 22-250.  Larry
