Back again, same basic question regarding an 45 Colt FA97 3-1/2" roundbutt. I'm either buying new tires for my truck, or special ordering a replacement for my Taurus 450SS snubby. The Taurus, though I would've prefered adjustable sights and didn't like the factory porting, was purchased as a CCW in 45 Colt, because my 4-5/8" 3-screw brass Super framed Blackhawk proved too heavy and bulky for most CC here in Maine. In many respects the Taurus is pretty good for me, controllable and comfortable, SS for 24/7 carry, and nearly as small and light as my 357 SP-101.
I'm really a single action lover, and much happier with them, and I CC mostly for 4-legged varmints and hunting, but would also feel entirely comfortable in a self defense situation. A year ago in "Handloader" I read Brian Pearce's article on the FA97 3-1/2" roundbutt and did as much research as possible online also and am convinced that this will be good choice for my wants and needs, but after getting a couple quotes of $1,850.00+ just want to be sure before putting my money where my mouth is!
I'm sold on Freedom Arms quality, but still haven't found a 97 to handle here in my area. I'd debated adding a 45 ACP cyl. - but don't plan to also buy a semi-auto pistol, and handload most of what I shoot, so think I've ruled that out. I'd planned to have them flute the cyl. to save 1/2 oz. in wt. unless somebody advise otherwise. Should I spend the extra to have action and trigger worked over at the factory? I think I'll go with the Express sight - any negatives for hunting or combat? I've recently considered the standard 4-1/4" barrel in lieu of the 3-1/2" spec. order, for longer sighting radius but less concealability and slightly more weight - thoughts?
This is worse than buying a new car or truck! I doubt I'll ever sell or trade this handgun, and will spend more time with it than my wife or dog! Any thoughts, observations, or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Joe
