Cast Bullets in the Handi Rifles
« on: September 03, 2005, 06:50:21 PM »
I am a cast bullet & Black Powder Shooter but I have been thinking about trying the 30 cal. or others with cast bullets & smokless powder.
Do any of you shoot cast bullets in your Handi Rifles???

There are quite a few cast shooters here. I've had the best luck with the older barrels that have the pre-micro-groove riflings in 30-30s, 30-40s and 45-70s, all with smokless powders.

I have read before that people don't think cast bullets will work well with micro groove barrels. I think the reason given is that they will lead foul the barrel quickly. The comment I have is that a .22 Lr usess a bullet that is simular to a cast bullet. I have a Marlin .22 with a micro groove barrel that is very accurate and does not foul the barrel any quicker than my other .22's.

Handi rifling is only about .002 deep so bullet fit is important from what I understand.

My 30-30 H&R casting story:

The story is still alive, but "frozen" due to a lack of time.

My 38-55 shoots as well as a Browning 1885 45-70 I had in the late eighties shot. I replaced the scope todya, fired 10 rounds, excluding the 1st shot used for a sighter, it put 9 rounds into 1", exclude the flyer, 8 shots were in 5/8" (50 yards) my 44 Mag shot just as well, but as has been mentioned, the bullet must fit the bore. The 44 shot eratic groups till I started feeding it .432 bullets, then it began to shoot nearly as good as my 38-55.

My 30-30 had a groove diameter of .310 and a bore diameter of .307. The chamber however was spec on, if not a tad tight.  The throat length was ideal for SAMMI spec ammo. I was never able to get what I consider decent groups at speeds above 1300 fps. The present owner shoots well with it.

My 357 Max drives me nuts. Currently I am shooting the RCBS 35-200-FN. At 1300-1400 fps it is shooting quite decently, but nothing to get overly excited about. The chamber itself is decent, but the throat is grossly oversize with a diameter of .379..... go figure

There seems to be a wide variation in NEF chamber and barrel dimensions, and there is no way to insure that what you get is up to a spec that is cast friendly. With present production barrels, a good cast shooter is at best a crap shoot, and generally, the defects that make it unfriendly to cast require a major change.

If you have a friendly gunshop/gunsmith that handles sizable flow of used guns; you may want to see if you can have some chamber casts  made of different rifles in a chambering you want to work with. While I remain satisfied with my 38-55, and will likely continue work with the 357, (to heavily invested) I for one will not get another NEF with the intent of using it as a cast bullet rifle.

Thanks for the compliment JPH!  Yes, I like cast in the .30-30 barrel, but I really only have success with gas checked bullets sized at .309".  I have not gotten those 155 gr Lee Tumble Lubes to shoot good sized at .311" or .309".  The Lyman 311291 gas checked bullet is doing great sized at .309" out of .30-30 or .30-06!

I think I'm beginning to see a pattern, with the powders I have chosen to use, that is producing very good groups at about 1200 fps with plain based bullets.  I used this site for some of my loading information and group predictions and you'll notice they get better groups around 1200 fps too.

Just about all of my barrels are marked "SB-2", so they are relatively new.  They should be micro grooved, but I think sometimes that depends on the caliber.

Yup, plain base bullets have shown severe velocity limitations for me in microgroove barrels. Somewhere in the 1000 -1200 fps range generally gives good results. I have not had any trouble with gas checked bullets as long as they were over groove diameter.

What do you guys mean by micro groove? Are you talking about the Marlin 12? land rifling or the fact that NEF has shallow rifling? I havent got a new barrel in awhile and hearing this wonder if they have went to Marlin MG rifling. Someone clarify? Thanks Jay
