I just happen to own both. I'll have to agree with DEPUTY. The High-Point has been 100% reliable for me, and I have no doubts about the effectiveness of my Federal 135 grain Hydra-Shock hollowpoints on soft targets. But I keep the M1 carbine and a couple of mags close to hand, one loaded with softpoints, and one loaded with hardball, just cause you never know. I would grab that weapon first. Familiarity and versitility, I guess. It works for me.

The Hi-Point is a lot shorter that the M1, at close range I don't really think a 30 Carbine has any real advatage over a the 9mm, of course the 30 is more powerful, but it close range right?  I love my Hi-Point.

M1 vs Hi Point

Carbine more powerful cartridge, larger capacity.  But neither advantage is probably decisive for defensive use within the home.  Carbine may be a little more reliable?
Each would be a reasonable choice for HD at limited range; if you get out to 25-50 yds or more, carbine has an advantage.

M1 carbine :D  We had them in our patrol cars in the old days :)
I shot cows, deer, pigs, dogs with mine and I really liked the little gun.

The only thing that would sway me on this is capacity.
The .30 carbine sends a 110 gr projectile at about
1900 fps out of its short barrel. A 95 grain 9mm JHP
leaves my 4 in. Beretta at about 1320 fps. I do not know how
much it would be in a carbine but it couldn't be too far behind
the .30 carbine. Plus you have a great deal more choices of ammo in
9x19. 88 grain up to the stout 158 gr IMI Samson rounds.
The .30 carbine comes factory in 110 gr FMJ or 110 Gr sp.
A .30 carbine is also COSTLY where a Hi-Point is very reasonable.
As a small home defense weapon, I do not really think you would go wrong with either. Just remember that you could get a Mini-14
with several "attachments" for what you can get a .30 carbine for now.
and a .223 with 55 grain ballistic tips is one nasty round inside of a couple of hundred meters.  Just a Thought..

if you have to ask.....

well, just buy the Hi Point.  Its cheap, and the world loves the 9mm.
