.222 VS .223?
« on: September 04, 2005, 03:10:25 PM »
Is there any advantage to shooting a .222 versus a .223? I know the introduction of the .222 halted the popularity of many wildcat/production .22 cartridges at the time.  I know .223 brass, bullets, info is abundant, so I'm wondering why one would choose the .222 at this time.

Best I can come up with is because it is available and some shooters like to be a tad different. Explains why I got a 25-06 when it first came out as a commercial cartridge, everyone else in the woods toted a 30-30 or 30-06 to hunt deer and I wanted something more unique. From a utilitarian perspective, it is a slam dunk in favor of the 223.

While the world of .22 accuracy is now dominated by the ppc's and such, when the .223 came along, the bench crowd found it wasn't as accurate as the .222.  But the difference was not significant in the real world.
A fellow would have to be a much better shooter than me to tell the difference.  And I own rifles for both cartridges.
Considering that you can get 1000's of once fired GI cases for very little and surplus ammo for pennies, the .223 is the way to go if you're a varminter or a "friendly" paper puncher.

In the real world there is no difference in the 2 round. And if you want the cheap mil brass you better get yourself a primer pocket expander or you`ll have more greef than you can handle. I ahve both and the .222 is more accurate, but that is the gun. Buy the one you can get the best deal on.

Today you can shop & buy mil. brass with primer pockets reamed at a
good price. I understand those who have .222's now, but I no no logic
in buying one now unless it was a very special gun.

There's not a great deal of difference between the .222Rem. and the 223.
The .223 is a little more powerful while the .222Rem. is one of the most accurate calibers around.  It doesn't boil down to much more than personal opinion.  Best wishes.

I Theory the .222 is the more accurate. I own both my .223 shoots right along side my .222. I worry more about a good deal. On a used gun you might be able to shoot it and if it is very accurate I take it regardless of which caliber. The .222 has ever so slightly less power and will shoot bullets 50 Grain down better. Most .222 come with a 1 in 14 and on occassion 1 in 12 twist unless they are custom. Several .223 come with a 1 in 9 twist.
