Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage: What is the average price?
« on: September 04, 2005, 03:47:42 PM »
Hi:

Does anyone know what the average price of a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage would cost either through a private sale or from a gun dealer?  Which Model 99 should I look for and if it needed to be repaired, where can I get parts?

Thanks,

Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage: What is the

The most common (and the best looking, in my opinion) Model 99 in .300 Savage is the "EG" model... a classic rifle with a schnoble forearm & a 24-inch barrel.

The "EG" was introduced in 1935 and discontinued in 1960.  Checkering was added in 1940.  Both the "early model EG's" (made prior to World War 2) and the "late model EG's" (made after WW2) have that ultra-smooth rotary magazine with a cartridge counter on the left side of the receiver, lever safety and a "cocked" indicator.

Try to buy one made prior to 1960 for the best quality.  The cost will depend on the condition of the rifle you buy, but expect to pay at least $450-$500 for one made after World War II in "good-to-very-good" condition... and up to $750 for one in excellent condition.

Most professional gunsmiths know where they can get parts for Savage Model 99s if any parts are ever needed.  However, the Model 99 is a very dependable, well-designed rifle that very rarely (if ever) needs parts or repairs.

Thanks,

Ron T gave you some insight and you better believe condition and price are joined at the hip.
If you find one that looks good to you and the price is in the "ball park"
plus it`s of a cal you like, remember that the 99 (pre-mil) is getting harder to find. You better believe if you don`t buy it someone else will.
I looked for 6 yrs ( lots of gray-rats in my area) till i came across a
very nice(IMO) 99 in .300 DOM-1952.  I was on that thing like a bum at a free lunch.  Now i have a "buddy" for my 99f in .250. life is good.
If you do get a 99 watch out cause if you get one the need for another will be ever present.
Took my .300 to the range yesterday to see how it shoots. Whoa, am i a happy camper. Hope your experience with a 99 will be the same.
