From what i was told they were never made. They cataloged them but dumped the project. Its a fairly easy conversion though on a .35 rem gun.

They did chamber the 336 in .356 winchester back in the 80's but there were only about 2,000 made (i think thats how many).  They were called the 336 ER (extended range).  The guns are kind of hard to find and when you do find them they go for a good chunk of change.  Another option is there is a guy that will change a 336 in .35 rem to the .356.  I am thinking about this option but it will be awhile till I can do it.

SSK Industries www.sskindustries.com a sponsor of this website does this work. They've done a good many of them and some members of the site here have had the work done by them.

This sounds really nice. But what are the chances I could find a 35 Rem like this after the conversion? Or should I just sit sweet and content with it and give up the 356 Win Quest? Can you see my position here, as this 336C .35 Rem is a dream in accuracy and function. It delivers the groups with open sights (200 gr Rem SPs) and functions flawless whether sideways or upright or upside down.

what are you wanting to use the gun for.  Are you wanting to hunt deer and black bear or are you wanting to go after moose and elk with it.  The .35 rem should be all you need for deer and bear if you keep the ranges down to a reasonable distance, should even do for elk and moose if kept under 100 yrds (just opinion as I have never hunted for these animals) the .356 would add some range but you just have to decide if that is what you are after.   For me I have the .35 for short range, 100-150 yards and other guns for the longer range stuff.

My hunting load for the .35 is a 200gr corlokt running just over 2200 fps.  should kill anything as dead as could be.

I have a 336er in 356. I had been looking for one for years and just by luck found one at a local gun show.
Great rifle, it is worth the wait. But if you can't wait i would go ahead and do the conversion.
nonneman did a conversion on a 30-30 to a 307 for me last year for around $100. it works great.
Good Luck

You settled it w/o a doubt. I ain't messin with this gun. I have others that would work on the heavier and longer range stuff! Sometimes I lose focus and think I need another rifle for some reason. I know this is very hard for us to think this way with our present collection...(!). Txs for bringing me back on board here.....

I called SSK Industries last week about having my Marlin 336CS 35 Rem. rechambered to 356 Win. The lady I talked to was really nice. She said they do this conversion from time to time and its not a big deal. In addition to reaming the chamber they also have to open up the bolt face. The 35 Rem. has a smaller diameter bolt face then the 356 Win. You could probably use a bolt assembly from a 30-30 Win. since the 30-30 and the 356 have the same size rim.

If you were to have a 30-30 Win. rechambered to a 307 Win. the only thing you have to have done is have the chamber reamed. The bolt face doesn't have to be opened up because the 30-30 Win. and the 307 Win. (and the 356 Win.) have the same rim diameter. Its one less thing to worry about. Plus you can find 30-30 Wins. all over the place!

I think a 336Y or a 336SS in 307 Win. would be a great woods rifle. I could also say the same thing about a 336CS in 356 Win., especially if it's going to be more of a black bear, wild boar and then a deer rifle!

*Here* is Winchester's factory loads for the 307 Win. and 356 Win. The 307 Win. has 20 grains less bullet weight and .050 of an inch less bullet diameter. I don't think there is a deer, black bear or wild boar out there that could tell the difference! Good luck!!!
