45-70 Low Velocity load data
« on: September 06, 2005, 12:01:36 PM »
This site was mentioned in another post here somewhere.  http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm

Those in the know have a gander at the info there, specifically the low velocity 45-70 loads using AA#2.  What do you think?  Safe?  I've heard some bad things about fast powders in large cases.  I'm looking for some extra mild loads to familiarize myself with a new ghost ring setup.  I want to use some bulk 400gr JSP and 405 hard cast I have on hand for the purpose.

Haywire, if you want, I can check with my shootin buddy, who is a big proponent of XMP5744 for low pressure loads, among them, the 45-70.
He worked some up last year for a friend of his with a Marlin in that caliber & I shot a few..........very pleasant, JD45
P.S. The thing about it is it fills the case very well.

I found a load using 2400 at Steve's pages, starting load was 19.5gr for a 400gr cast.  I loaded up a couple at 19.6gr and they were very comfortable.
I loaded up one with that AA#2 load (10gr) and it cracked like a pistol.  Kinda made the hairs stand up.  Won't do that again.

Haywire, if you got good results with 2400, I don't know why you wouldn't stick with it. I'd not use the fastest powder Accurate offers in such a large case with such a heavy bullet........IMHO, it's a recipe for a serious KABOOM! Just my 2 cents, JD45

I think the 2400 is going to be the load I'm going to use.  I have 50 loaded up waiting for me to get the time to shoot the plate targets I have set up at 50yds...  should be a hoot.

I do some reduced load cast bullet reloading and shooting.  I have found that both 2400 and H-4895 are my two favorite powders.

The Hodgdon powder sight has a Youth load at 60% of their full power H-4895 loading for jacketed bullets.  For gas checked cast lead bullets, if you contact them, they will sugest using 50% to 60% of the full H-4895 load for reduced cast bullet loads.

For smaller cases like 30-06, 7.62x54R, etc about 16 grains of Alliant 2400 works great for me.

If 2400 provides some enjoyable loads, go for it.

A 500gr cast bullet over 14 gr of Unique work very well for me.

Haywire....

I wouldn't bother wasting time on AA#2 loads for the same reasons you are having doubts. It just isn't worth the gamble of your rifle and life to keep from buying 15 bucks worth of the proper powder in the burn rate range you want.

I am using Oregon Trail 350 and 405 laser cast bullets with great success in my Marlin 1895GS guide gun. If you have access to Oregon Trail load data, you should check it out. They have a web site where data is probably accessable, but I have their manual.

29.5gr of H4198 pushes a 405g cast bullet at about 1400fps.....a pleasant load and accurate.

Are you using the XS ghost ring sights. That's what I have, and I really do like these sights.....you will too.

good luck

Nope, have a "One Ragged Hole" sight for my NEF Handi.  Takes some getting used to.  www.oneraggedhole.com

I will put in a good word for Greg Mushials data.  I shoot 10gr. of Titegroup, and have used it for many thousands of rounds.  This is in a Marlin, Ruger, and NEF Buffalo Classic.  All found this combination very accurate.  My 6 year old has even shot this load.  The only fear I have is double charging, so I go through and view each case with a flashlight.  I also enjoy using HS-6, as well.  These are plinkers, when the slower  powders, (2400), and XMP5744, make a very usable hunting load.  I sue 25gr. of 2400, or about 29gr. of XMP5744.

This is an excedingly cheap way to get to know your gun, and gives you a great insight into casting, and finding out what bullet your gun prefers with little if any pain.  I don't use fillers, and its a good idea to read why in his write up concerning convective ignition.
