If you could only have 1 Handi for all your hunting and defense needs, which one would it be?  Why?

I would have to choose the 45-70.  What about you?

Dang, what am I thinking, ONLY 1!

Easy decision.45/70.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

Since you didn't  get specific ie;.from what...or whom...I have to presume you mean all defense...2 legged and 4...?

The difference means a-lot...if both...then to me this means not only up close and personal...but taking incoming fire from long distances...if it were just up close and personal from the 2 legged kind...then none of the Handi's would suffice for me...it would have to be a modified 870 or Spas-12...at long distances with multiple targets...a single shot wouldn't be my first choice either...but if limited to distant targets and only having a Handi to go with..it would be my 30-06 Ultra-Comp...or my 338-06...change that line of thought...make it dangerous game like big bad bears with distances involved other than at the end of the rifle...my 338-06 would get the nod with the 45-70 coming in a close second, make it at spitting distances...then my 45-70 would be what I grabbed...if I couldn't get my hands on a 12ga. loaded with Brenekee's or some other hardend slug

My first choice for a one-weapon-for-all wouldn't be a Handi, but if that's all I could choose from, I'd probably choose the 45-70.

I would never think of a single shot for home defence....however if I had to it would be with a 12 gauge with slugs. I would also have a bayonet affixed to it some how for that really close up stuff in case I didn't have time to reload :)

I guess for ducks, geese, turkeys, pheasants and ect I could take my bayonet off and use bird shot because I have never been good enough wing shot with  the rifles  :-D. Who knows I may see a squirrel or rabbit and the small 8 shot wouldn't do as much damage as a larger rifle.

Slugs would work great for deer and I suppose I could put a real hurt on a bear. I would keep my bayonet on for the bear to  cause them can get real mean . :-D  :-D I hope no one takes offence to my candor as I mean none to nobody here. Hope everyone is having a great day...

There ya go a 12ga a Survivor stock, and with a Bayo attached.  I opt for a shorter barrel then...... 16" anyone? :)
Then again, I'd have to be close up on those birds. Spreading a pattern that big....
And bear? Man with a 3" 12ga honk'n slug flying, if it hits, will stop any living thing I have ever seen.
Shotguns are so versitile, ya got to love them.

45-70 of course...

works great on everything from whistlepig to elephant.  and in a pinch, 410 shell can be shot it it.

I'd have to go with a 12 guage and I'd want buckshot for defense.

I would have to conclude that if i could only have 1 it would be because of either economic reasons or Government intrusion. Therefore I would have to choose the .357 Magnum or the Rechambered .357 max.
The reasons would be.
 Ammo availability, .38 special, 357mag or the super-charged 357max:

1.) .38 specials are available at super low cost and just about everywhere in the country, which offers the opportunity to practice a lot without waking the dead.
2.)The .357 mag cartridge is also readily available and offers good home protection as well as an affective close range deer round.
3.) The .357max brings the energy level to the point that just about any North American Game animal can be dispatched if the range is ethical.

The .30-30 would be my 2nd choice for many of the same reasons.

The .45-70 while very nice, it can be hard on the wallet for $$ conscience Handi-owners that don't reload.
no x now!

I know it is boring, but a .243 will just about do it all, it not better at any one thing but it is good at them all.  Larry
