I chucked this "Cute" barrel back up in the lathe and began to finish the cascadable. I first roughed it to legnth leaving a little nub for the center to run in.

Next I used a large nosed tool to rough the radius on the end.

After that was done I filed the end to shape. Then I emeryed the toolmarks out of this end. Now I need to cut the nub off with a hacksaw.

I'll file the end and clean it up with some emery.

Almost ready to shoot!!! I got the trunions made and the studs that hold them onto the barrel. I'll take a close up of that when I take it apart again. Jeeper1 wants me to test fire it for him, so I'll build a small test stand for it. I'm going to use the test stand to hold it to drill the vent hole sinse I forgot to do it while it was in the dividing head. I'll be sure to take some action shots. Here are a couple of pictures. The pooch in the back is Petunia. She's as cute as that barrel I think

It's a toss-up. At that high a level of cute it's hard to discern the difference!

Are the trunnions screwed on grade 5, or 8 studs and loctited?

Hi, They are grade 5 1/4" studs made from allthread. I will locktite them after I get the barrel polished. All they have to do is hold the trunions on to the barrel. There isn't much sheer because the trunions fit tite into a pocket. I had to clamp the trunions in a vice between two pieces of wood to get them screwed down all the way.

Here is the settup I used when drilling out the Vent hole. The first picture shows me using a center drill to start the hole true. The second picture shows the 1/8" drill I used to drill the vent.

Hows the preponderance?
Looks heavy at the front.

On a couple that I have built, I had to re-cut 1/8" off all the muzzle diameters. to make the breach heavy.

That's always guess work for me exactly where to put them (especially on a pattern).

John Muler says in his "A Treatise of Artillery" the trunnions should be 3/7 the distance from the breach to the muzzle.

If I remember right, civil was guns required 10% weight on the elevation screw and the trunnions a tad below center so on fireing, the recoil pushed the barrel down, not up.

Hello, I agree on seeing how others are doing things. I love to learn diffrent tricks to help make things easer. I used to cuss it, but the shop I work in has some old wore out krap for equipment. The mill I run was made in 1905 :shock: I machine big reduction boxes that have over 1000 horse power run through them. I can hold pretty tight tolerances on that old mill because I had to learn all kinds of tricks to make everything work right.

I have Jeeper1's barrel ready to go. Test stand ready and everything. I'll test it this weekend.

Hello, Got the test carriage built a couple of weeks ago. I went out today and test fired this for Jeeper1. Wow!!! Here is a video with 100 grains of powder and a 7/8" lead ball. http://myweb.cableone.net/wesleyp9/videos/MVC-589V.MPG It recoiled about 2 1/2 feet when fired. I'm going to have to build one of these for myself.

I got this barrel done! Here are some pictures. They didn't turn out as good as the real thing :x I have a digital camera and it is sometimes hard to get it to focus on really shiny things. Man I need one of these barrles.
