What kind of fool am I?
« on: September 08, 2005, 03:48:56 AM »
I just paid $140 for a set of rings and bases for my rifle! What kind of a moron am I? They are Talley quick-detach rings, which come highly recommended.  However, that's a big price to pay.  I did it just because they're supposed to be the best QD rings.  Of course, I've got a couple of sets of Leupolds that are probably nearly as good at half the price.

My long range rifle has a Badger base...$150 and Badger rings $150.

$300 total....and that was not even installed.

Guys: if i had to pay that much for rings/base , I`d be using duct tape, premium grade.
All these yrs i thought Redfield and Weaver  was the way to go.
You guys must be single, if your not wait till your wife finds out...............you`ll be banished to the garage for 3 weeks. :)

Won't say you were a fool Rudy, but will say I never have and never WILL spend that much on base/rings. Just see no possible reason to justify it. If you really have a NEED for detachable scope then the old Weaver bases were the orginal quick detach rings. Weaver and Redfield I believe both now make the Weaver bases from steel if you don't care for the aluminum ones.

I've taken several brands of Weaver type rings (NEVER EVER WEAVER BRAND THO) off Weaver or Weaver type bases and put them back on and the repeatablity is fine. No need to resight for realistic hunting ranges.

Personall tho I prefer to mount a scope as solid as I can and leave it the heck alone. I buy only quality components and in all my years of scope use have never yet had one fail during a hunt. Might happen some day but I'm sure not gonna spend huge bucks on detachable base/rings just in case it does.

Spend the money if you have it to spare.  What's $140 worth to you after you're dead.  Put together a rifle that will make you and your heirs happy.  Just make sure you squeeze every last ounce of enjoyment you can out of it before they get a hold of it.

Guys....I must fess up.

Badger Ordnance rings and bases are the end all of such.  They are for serious long range shooters for high dollar 30mm scopes.

You may not have a need....but they are not just doing buisness with only fools.

Later,
Kyle

I figure a man wants what he wants, and that is what he should have, if he can pay for it responsibly.  I've not ever paid that much to mount a scope, but going with the best is never a "fool" thing.

I was elk hunting in Wyoming one time and went to jump a little steam and slipped on a slick rock.  My feet went up and my head went down.  I landed right on my rifle scope and it took a pretty good hit.  It knocked the finish off in 2-3 places.  I was about half afraid to shoot at something the rest of the day.  The next day I went down off the mountain and checked my zero.  It was still hitting right where it was supposed to.  I don't for sure remember what mounts/rings/scope they were, but most likely Redfield.  If it stood up to that, it would stand up to anything I'm likely to subject it to from now on.  But, nothing wrong with going a little more if you want to.

GB:

This falls under the same category as my 6.5JDJ barrel and a few other expensive geegaws I've bought over the years. In this case, the Leupold quick detach rings with levers are working pretty darned well. I use them on my bullseye 1911 as an aid to cleaning. I just remove my red dot sight with the QD rings, and start cleaning with reckless abandon without worrying about messing up an electronic sight with solvent.

In this case I wanted what is considered to be the best, I paid for it, and SURE ENOUGH, once again, it's buyer's remorse.

On the other hand, the 6.5JDJ has been great in the field and I hope that these rings will be also. I also like the looks better than the Leupolds.

By the way, my wife WOULD kill me if I told her how much these things cost.  (Never mind the $400 scope I bought to go with the rings.)

A lotta guys spend way more then that, on booze, dope, gambling, or women.

As long as you got what you wanted, & you get your use out of it, there's a bunch worse ways to spend your money.

TNrifleman,

You couldn't a wasted all the rest.  You had to spend some on your truck or your dog.

Crow Feather,

You are correct, I have spent some on my truck and dog. That's the "and with them " part!

TNrifleman is right. Dogs (provided that they are hunting dogs), trucks, guns, and I daresay fishing equipment, are all on the same account.   Little obnoxious foo foo dogs are on the same account as Hepplewhite furniture, crystal, dishes that nobody is allowed to use, and those other dust gathering devices that women are so fond of.

By the way, the rings and bases are very nice in appearance and seem to function pretty well as quick detach rings, but by the time I had the gun sighted in with the new rings and had it zeroed for 200 yards, I was getting a little sore, so I'll have to test repeatability of zero when I remove and replace the rings repeatedly at my next session.

Just think, If you were shooting some of the big Nitro Express rounds, you'd just about pay that for one cartridge...

They are excellent and well worth the price.

The hunter's hope; Use them in good health and over game animals in Africa.
