Which 22 Mag?
« on: September 08, 2005, 06:52:40 AM »
The next rifle I buy will be a 22 mag.  I have a Henry 22LR and love it.  It is accurate, not the most accurate 22 I've owned, but accurate enough to plink.

In the 22 mag, I am looking to use it primarily to hunt bobcats.  Range will be 100yds or less, in the mountains.

The Henry 22 mag sells for about $340 on gunbroker.  This is about the same as the Ruger 10/22 mag model.  How accurate and how reliable is the ruger and the henry in the 22 mag models.

I shoot LH so type of action is a consideration.

I have looked online at the Savage 93GL in LH bolt, but am reading bad things about their LR version.  Is the mag version prone to the same issues?

Any experience with accuracy with these rifles?

Any other LH or LH friendly 22 mag rifles out there?

Thanks.

I have a Winchester 9422M that works well, and should be good for a left hander also.  The aren't making them any more, but new ones still are available, and used 22 mags are easy to find in great shape.  Lots of them are little or never used.

I also have a .22 Mag T/C Contender that is useable by anyone as well.

IfI go with a lever, it'll be a Henry to go with my Henry 22LR but was thinking more like a bolt or Ruger 10/22 mag

I have a 22 mag Henry and I love it. At 50 yards shooting CCI FMJ I shot a group that had 4 shots in one hole about 30 cal size and one flyer to make it still under a half inch for a 5 shot group at 50 yards. Just got Some Remington Premier ammo to try with the balistic tips. I had only a couple when I got the Henry and they showed promise I just never got a round to trying some more. If you like Lever guns I think you will be happy with a 22 mag Henry. Mine has a compact Leupold M8 4x on it and it is a dandy rig.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I can't speak to the Henry, but I can offer some insight on the Ruger 10-22 mag. I've been hunting with one for two years and am most satisfied with it. New I had some stovepipes for a couple of hundred rounds. Cleaning the chamber about every 50 rounds is a must for the first 200 or 300 rounds. Re-tensioning the factory magazine will also help with reliability. Once past the ( break-in) period already mentioned, you will have no problems. As for accuracy, I shoot a Pro-Point red- dot ( 5moa) mine will shoot 2-2 1/4 " @ 100 yds. 3/4- 1 " @ 50yds. I feel sure a good scope would improve on this some. I'm a righty, so I can't speak to how a left hander would like it, I would think that it might be a little inconvenient.

My other rifles seldom get used anymore. Good luck  and good hunting to you!!!

I've had a Marlin 883 for about 11 years. It has put many rabbits in the freezer.

i've used both marlin 25 mag and ruger 10/22 mag.  the marlin is much more accurate, probably because of the longer barrel.

In regular priced rifles, it is hard to beat a Marlin for accuracy. My Anschutz is very accurate...but then...at their prices they better be !
Back in the 1970s Mossberg maade some low priced rifles trhat were very accurate..especially in the .22 mag. If you can find a used 340K at a good price, don't hesitate.
Don't know why Mossberg quit making rifles..those rimfire Mossys were accurate...and a great buy, dollar wise.

Only two reasons: They weren't selling or they cost to much to make at a profit.

mag shooter,

Good to hear you like your--now--dependable Ruger 10/22 mag.  I have one and perhaps my stovepiping problem is about over.  Took it out and shot 50 rounds of Winchester FMJ through it this evening and not one problem.  Would you consider a particular ammo to be most reliable in this gun?  Have you heard of the Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor which is supposed to make this gun more reliable?  Have you heard that Ruger is now using a "double extractor" in this gun?

I also hear that the bolt stop pin is subject to breakage on this gun.

Sure hope my problems with my gun are over.  Great gun if so.

Don, I like the 40 gr. rounds, here's my theory. I would think that the bolt weight, recoil spring are ballanced for a given pressure -(bullet weight) in a blow back design. This may not be correct, but it is my belief. Yes I have heard of the VQ exactedge extractor, no I don't use one, mine is the factory extractor. Basically, on this particular blow-back action, the extractor is used primarily for extraction of un-fired rounds. Mine will fire and function flawlessly without the extractor in it. Yours will also, once the stovepiping problem is gone.Yes I have heard that Ruger is using double extractors. I have not seen any yet, I also was told that this was Rugers orignal response to the early stovepiping problems. I have also heard that Ruger has suspended production on the 10-22 mag for some reason. I don't know if this is true, but my gunsmith hasn't been able to get one from any of his suppliers for several months. My bolt stop pin is factory and has around 10000-12000 rounds. It shows no sign of breakage, or bending.

Like I have said, clean the chamber every 50 or so rounds, just a couple of turns with a brush, nothing elaborate. Tighten the tension on your mags, this alone will help a great deal with reliablity, at least it always has on the 10-22's that I have owned. If these suggestions and a couple of hundred rounds don't clear the issue and you should decide to sell the rifle, PLEASE give me first chance. If there is anything that I can do to help, just let me know.
