Garmin iQue M5
« on: September 08, 2005, 12:36:31 PM »
I bit the bullet, and picked up the M5 last week. I like it better than the 3600 but that's mainly due to the software. The only thing that I do not care for is the lack of a real compass. Battery life is great so far, and I really love the user changeable battery over "you gotta the send it in" 3600. Now I need to find a quality Wifi SD card for it.
Anyone else got one of these?

I can see a lot of applications for those who work in ICP's on emergencies.  You could have a lot of team data in the unit plus the advantage of a gps.  The battery life of this unit is an improvement  And 12v connection is important.

A great tool for those team members who are working at an Incident Command Post.  A tool for those who do not carry a pack with a laptop in it.  But Garmin does not assign a water proof standard to it.  Best kept in a vehicle.  A second gps meeting a water resistant standard for the ground pounder.

I know a few deputies who carry a trunk load of old-fashion note books whose modern counter part could or will make good use of the M5.  The ability to store data on 1GB cards is an asset.  I understand you can also run MapTech Topo Maps on it.

Please keep us up to date.
There is a learning process to effectively using a gps.  Do not throw your compass and map away!
