Almost sold my Handi 25-06
« on: September 09, 2005, 09:29:08 AM »
:D I don't know if youv'e felt like I have, but I came one post short of selling my guns for a new custom bolt gun. mt fluted 223 is a great little rifle and i shoot it as well as I can shoot, The 25-06 ultra is another matter altogether. I could set the rifle after 6 or 7 shots and miss my foot and toes. At 6'5" the stock and rifle beats the stuffing out of me them i saw the post about the choate stock and the light bulb came on, don't sell the rifle dummy change the stock. The choate stock on my fluted is easier to hold steady on the bags and handles recoil very well. So i'll keep my 25-06 and if it solves my problem then I'll pick 2-3 more of these rifles up. has anyone else felt like this and has the wood stock pounded you like it has me?

Kess:

Stock problems abound here...in all shapes and sizes. Is your stock beating your cheek black and blue...if so...install a nylon or neopreane sheel holder and add a little dense cell foam under it or if that's too thick...pick up one of the 1/8" to 1/2" thick sorbathane stick on cheek pads sold at most trap range pro-shops...this should eliminate some of the problem. If the stock is just plain too high...try one of the shotgun stocks on it...several here have gone that route.

Install a quality recoil pad on it...a-lot of us use the small grind to fit Limbsaver...believe me..it works and isn't that difficult to do yourself.

If the recoil is still too much...add some weight to the stock...I added #6 shot to mine...and it tames even hot 45-70 loads down to very managable levels.

I haven't shot the regular synthetics yet..so I don't know their worth...but from the ones I've handled in the store...they seem pretty nice...

No, I haven't cept for the scoped 45-70 with the checkered shotgun stock on it, shooting 540gr loads in it. It didn't hurt me recoil wise on the shoulder cuz I have a short lead filled pipe in the stock bolt hole, but it beat the heck out of my cheek. Perhaps doing what Mac recommends and placing a neoprene cartridge carrier on the stock with a little extra foam to cushion your face might help. I shoot my 25-06 on a frame with the laminated stock and no extra weight or cheek protection and have never had any problems with the recoil using 115-120gr factory loads. So it could just be how the stock fits you and the lighter weight of the wood stock.

The 25-06 I have is a 26" Ultra with a Laminated stock, the only factory
version that I have seen. If you have the same, we must be talking about
a major problem with the fit here, as this gun has a little weight & the
round is very mild.

I shoot factory 90 and 120 grain loads in my Ultra 25-06 and it is not a problem. I do have the shell holder on the stock which softens it up some.

:D Gentlemen i went back to the range today and hand a much better day. I put 7 rounds into 3 inches witha 20mph quatering wind. At 100 I have five groups of 4 shots each that ran 11/4, 3/4, 1", 3/8" and fianally my worst group 2". I finally figured out the problem, I was creeping up on the stock. My height on the bench is a pain at times. I got into a good locked position and shot very well. The recoil didn't seem mucjh of an issue today. I forgot about shooting 2 boxes of shells at dove and chasing them all over the desert last week. Funny I didn't think about being tried and beat up from Doves. Did get my 15 bird limit. Never had a shot under 25 yards. This little rifle is a keeper for sure. I am going to put the Choate varmint stock on this rifle and I have a feeling the groups will improve greatly. My Fluted 223 put a ten shot group at 100yds into less than one inch. love that little gun!!!!!!!
