Plinking, Sig Misquito or Walther?
« on: September 09, 2005, 02:30:12 PM »
I have previous experience with the Walther and it seemed to be plenty accurate for plinking and training.  Anyone have any experience with the new sig misquito?

I have a mosquito, have had it for about a year. have about 2000 rounds through it and not a single problem with it. Accuracy I have found depends a lot on the ammo coming out of the barrel. I would not hesitate to buy another one.

Buy a Sig Trailside, there are still a few left.   They shoot great with any ammo.  Put a scope on one, feed it good ammo, and watch it outshoot your stock 10-22.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

I have heard more negative than positive on both of these guns. The only two .22 autos I would trust are the Ruger and Browning.

Can't say anything about the Sig, but my P22 is not exactly a shining example of German engineering and manufacture.  Mine is back at Smith & Walther to fix severe gouging of the slide after less than 1000 rounds.  I've also struggled to get any acceptable accuracy from the pistol.  Out of the box I could do 2" groups at 15 yards with a Ruger 22/45 and a Browning Buck Mark.  With the P22 I've managed to go from "where did they go?" to sub 6" groups with a couple of 2" groups.  I'm not that good a shooter and the P22 seems to magnify my flaws.  The P22 extractor is not well designed and can through the casings in your face or down your shirt.  The only things I can give the P22 high marks for are size, light weight and "cool" factor.

My opinion may change depending on the fix from S&W, but now it is a challenge to shoot and you are buying a NIB "project gun."  There are a number of fixes out there to get the P22 to function acceptably.  It certainly doesn't compare favorably to my 22A, MKIII's or Buck Mark for accuracy or reliability.

I've heard a lot of negative for both of these firearms also, as I get ready to make the same choice.  My problem is that I just don't like the look of the round barreled guns.  The Rugers, the Buck Marks......and such.

I like the look of the P22 and the Mosquito.   One of my buddies bought a P22 and is waiting on his carry permit to pick it up.....I might wait until he gets his and see how it does.  Improvements are being made on both firearms....so the newer versions of them are obviously better than the older ones.....    In my mind, the P22 is the choice because is costs less.....given the choice I'd rather pay $250 for something that isn't going to work, rather than $400.    ::)

First off this is one of the coolest sites I've found on anything guns.  I really like it.

Now to the Walther P22.  I bought one in March of 06 and have close to 4000 rounds through it.  I always carry it to the hunting club during the off season for snake duty.  Love this gun is an understatement.  This gun flat shoots if you feed it right and keep it CLEAN.  I've shot just about every type of rd through it and can say that the cheap Federals from Wally world are horrible feeding but accurate.  The Rem. yellow Jackets are very good feeding with very few jams but accuracy suffers somewhat.  CCI Stingers are awesome and always feed and they are very very accurate.  The CCI Velocitors are the very best rd for my gun though, the best groups and they always feed.  This is what stays in mine 24/7.  You must shoot copper coated bullets.  Lead bullets will foul out the last 1 in of the barrel after only 200-250 rds and boy it is a pain to clean up.  I didn't know this and shot a brick of lead heads and completely lost the riflings in the last in of the bbl.  I've heard good and bad about this gun but in my opinion it was one of the best buys I've made in the last 3 yrs.

I'll modify my earlier comments on the P22 accuracy.  When I sent the pistol to S&W to fix the slide galling problem, they replaced the barrel.  I fired it yesterday and the barrel change appears to have made a heck of a difference in the accuracy.  At least it went from "where did it go?" to something I can fix by more practice with the pistol.  I had to fix the extractor problems (every casing back in my face) and the slide wear problems.  They seem to be unwilling or unable to address these problems.  Now that it shoots more predictably, I'm not as negative about the pistol as I was in my earlier post.

I haven't noticed any leading problems on mine.   I shoot mostly CCI Standard Velocity (lead, 40gr).  This SV, not the expensive stuff in the plastic box.  I get better results with this in all my rimfires, including the P22 than I do with high velocity ammo.  Thanks for the tip, I'll start looking for leading in the P22.

It seems that about 2/3 of the P22 owners really like them and about 1/3 really don't.  I may be shifting my position slightly now that I think I've got it working and shooting better.  For most .22's in comparable price ranges, "better" is a matter of preference.  However, from my experience the 22A, Ruger MKII/III and Buck Mark are better pistols than the P22.
