Bill, if you are after Brownies, look into a Kamchatka (Russian) trip. Now, that's different... If a moderate size Black bear will do, try Minnesota. (a current estimate of 36,000 for that state). Canadian long gun laws are affordable, but trip fees will run somewhat higher than those in MN, WI, or ME (for instance). WARNING: always do your homework (research) and ask potential guides for references as this is one sport you don't necessarily get what you pay for.  8)

Bill,

I forgot to add that the list I posted was dated 1994.  I imagine the population of bears has gone up in many if not most states.  I know from talking to wildlife biologist that in California they say that we have in excess of 35,000 Black Bears.  Not enough hunters hunting them.  It has been recommended that they increase the legal limit on bears but the so-called "EXPERTS" in Sacramento say it is not needed.  By the way I'm looking into one of those Kamchatka (Russian) Brown Bear trips.  They say the brownies are really big there.  Lawdog

P.S. - By the way the definition of an "EXPERT" is;  "X" the unknown quaintly and "SPURT" and unwanted drip.

Shame on you Talon suggesting that an American go spend money in Russia when their government won't support ours.  Keep the money here in America.

Kathy, I try very hard to keep politics out of my comments... it's one of the very few rules on this board. You let me know when Maine has a few Brown Bears to stawk, and my recommendations may change.

I am not saying hunt in Maine specifically.  I am just saying that Americans need our money now more than ever and we should be staying here and spending our money here.  After all, if ourfitters go out of business there will be less places for us to hunt and fish and isn't that what the anti's want.

I will not interject the usual political crap that always seems to start on certain threads. I'm just letting everyone know that if they are interested in a canadian spring or fall bear hunt, I'd be happy to field any questions regarding gun laws, border crossings etc. I also know quite a few bear outfitters in manitoba.  And if you choose to stay south of the border, that's cool too.

If I may ask bear bait, why the negative attitude? I'm all for buying canadian too, but I regularly make trips to the states to shop. But I wouldn't insult my american friends by telling them that we should close the borders and keep everyone out. I really feel sorry for you. And to all of our american friends reading this thread, the majority of the canadian people are behind you 100%. Sadly, we have a gov't who doesn't reflect the views of the people.

upnorth,

Canada is just like the U.S. has it's undesirable politicians.  It's a shame that so many got in power at one time.  I have to many friends that live in Canada not to know that you are trying to get rid of them.  I wish you all the luck in doing so.  Without the help of our friends to the north patrolling our northern borders would be totally impossible for us to do so alone.  Closing our borders is not an option.  Trying to stay out of the rest of the Worlds problem is what got us Pearl Harbor.  He who does not learn from the past is condemned to relive it.  Lawdog

Thanks lawdog, I appreciate it. Due the lack of funding , our military has been turned into a joke! Our communication equip is so outdated, we couldn't even communicate with our american allies in afghanistan. If we could contribute more to the fight against terrorism, we would. Trust me, Most canadians wish we could. Hey, I know you were looking for a manitoba elk a while back. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Your best bet to bag a black bear is Maine. Its season is long and it has both a bait, dog and fair chase season.
