What would you use?
« on: September 10, 2005, 03:13:38 AM »
In southern New Hampshire, due to the human population, deer hunting is restricted to the use of shotgun, muzzleloader, or handgun in the following calibers..357, 10mm,41 and 44 magnums, 45 Colt and 480 Ruger.

I'll be using my TC Contender with a 10" 44 magnum barrel and a Redhawk as a second gun. The TC will be scoped of course.

So .. What would you use in such a situation?

ya'll gonna look kinda silly with all dem guns hanging from your belt arn't ya?

I sure wish Idaho would recognize handguns as "short range weapons", the dummies.  Hell of a note that New Hamp. has more legislated gun sense than Idaho.

357 seems small to me as far as a big game round.  I have no experience with the 10mm or 41 so I would have to say since you are packing a contender 44, then you back up should be 44 as well, atleast that would make sense to me.

Good luck.

don't have any 44mags right now.. Id have to go with my 45 colt. don't care much for the 10MM as a deer round but basically any of the rest of what you mentioned will kill deer.

44 Mag sounds like the best choice in the handgun rounds you mentioned.  :D

The 44 should do well in NH for Deer  the 45 colt in a strong action can be loaded to and above the 44 and the newr 480 would be my pick. Ballistic s show it well above the 44 and i hear the recoil is not so bad . the 480 was developed to fill the notch between the 44 and the 454 . as far as power and recoil. I used to have a 10 1/2 inch barrel on my ruger super blackhawk it was a sweet heart to shoot and super accurate, i dont hunt with it anymore so i put on a 4 5/8 barrel much easier to carry.

There'll eithr be a 45Colt or a .41 mag with me in the woods this season here in Maine, so i'd use the same over there in NH.

As a main gun I'd be happy with anything from the .41mag on up to the .480.

As a backup gun a Glock 20 10mm w/hi-caps would be very nice.

Ohio has pretty much the same restrictions on handgun usage.  It's 5" or longer barrel, straight walled cartridge .38 caliber or bigger.  With that said, last year I used a Lone Eagle .44 mag., and while it was nice, I plan on trading it off on either a .41mag. blackhawk, or that new .45colt that they just got in at the gunshop in town...can't decide quite yet.  After using the lone eagle last year, I decided that I want one I can put into a holster, and that has open sights for offhand shots.  Not saying it can't be done with a scope on top, but not by this 'ol boy.  Good luck this year.

My choice has always been the handloaded 45 colt.
My load is a 300 Gr Speer with a healthy dose of 296 powder. It chronographs 1200fps in my 7.5 Bisley Ruger and 1625 in my Marlin 1894.
I have killed 6-7 hogs up to 350lbs as well as half a dozen or so Whitetails. Thru and thru penatration on all. One pig and one whitetail was shot end to end, brisket to behind. Taking out ribs, shoulders and shattering a ham bone on the pig! This works for me, I see no reason to change.

I have never been a 44 mag fan, but (Have to admit) would work as well. (I dont care for the 30/06 either. Guess I'm different like that?)

I love the 357 but its not a deer caliber. In a rifle it comes close.
You did not mention the 357 Maxi...Now that is a caliber I hold near and dear... 180 Speer flat point, 1675fps from my 10 Contender, 2150fps from my 22" NEF Handi rifle. Both with AA1680 powder. This caliber lays 'em low!!!

The 41 Mag is a good choice, as would the 10MM. (With at least 200gr bullets) I load 41's for my Father. He has had quite a run with Remington & Hornady XTP's in 210gr for Mr. Whitetail. His guns, a 6.5'' Blackhawk and Marlin 1894.

I have no experience with Rugers 480 cal, but paper balistics show it to be another good chioce.

Good luck,
 CW

Here in Delaware we have just about the same rules that you have in New Hampshire. This will be the first year that we can use hand guns.
I plan to hunt our pistol season with a T/C Contender in 357 maximum, scoped with a 2.5 X 7 Leupold.

Handloaded in a strong action a .44mag and a .45 long colt have very similiar ballistics. Either will do fine. I have no experience with a .41 mag, but have always wanted one and will either add a barrel to my contender or a revolver in that cartridge soon. Ballistically, I see no reason why it would not be an excellent deer cartridge. The 480 ruger has all the power you need and that super redhawk in the satin finish sure looks nice.

Good hunting,
Brian

The 480 Ruger may not be an option for you. I've never heard of that round chambered in a Contender barrel - Encore only. If anyone has one I'd like to hear of it.

45 Colt Vote
« Reply #13 on: September 11, 2005, 06:16:25 AM »
I'd vote for the 45 Colt.  I just tested my new hunting load at the range yesterday....awesome.  It's a Penn Bullets 270gr Thunderhead over 25.0gr of H110.  Not sure of the velocity, but out of a Ruger Super Balckhawk Hunter (7-1/2") it makes a respectable fireball and hits with authority.

Cut and pasted directly from the official NH Hunting Digest 2005-2006 published this past August it states:

Deer hunting is allowed only by shotgun, muzzleloading rifle,
handguns in calibers .357 Magnum, 10mm Automatic, .41
Remington, .44 Magnum, .45 Long Colt or .480 Ruger, or bow and
arrow in the following towns.

Note that the text does not simply read ".357" but rather "357 magnum". I'm wondering whether that would include or exclude the 357 Maximum? It would probably be good to find out from NH Fish and game before using. Myself, I own and use a 357 Max in NH however I live and hunt in an area where all calibers including rifles are allowed (for now   ).

Most people haven't heard of the .357 Max., so it's unlikely to be used or listed.

Most probably the reason they specifically list the calibers is to make sure that the ammo used has enough power to take a deer.  Here in Ohio, the law is "straightwall, .357 caliber or larger, out of a 5 inch barrel"  So, you could use a .38 spl and still be legal.  Not the best round for deer, and so it sounds like your state has tried to ensure that underpowered cartridges are not used.  A .38-55 might qualify, technically, and though it's straight-wall and tapered, vs. straight-walled and parallel, you're not likely to win that argument in court.

Above 44 Mag
« Reply #16 on: September 12, 2005, 01:18:19 PM »
To me, an older sort that reloaded for a Super Blackhawk in the late 70's, isn't going to convince me. I did own a few Casuals and a recent 500 S/W. But I think the 44 Mag is very fine and worth using in your Contender. For back-up or even for replacement I would opt for a 29 or Colt 44 Mag 6 shooter. The newer super mags don't impress me for the job you are looking to do. Hanguns beyond the .44 Mag do not turn my crank. They cost more and appear to do more without just using a short and handy 30-30 or 35 35 Rem Marlin rifle. Just my opinion having seen and used the bigger and louder and heavier handguns while wondering what the ado was all about. Much Ado About Nothing for me.

Well, that's one take on it and without the benefit of living in NH and/or knowing the context in which that text was written I'd say a reasonable conclusion. However the truth is that that list of handgun calibers applies only to the most densely populated portion of the state typically referred to as the "shotgun only" towns. Muzzleloaders are the only other long guns permitted in those zones with the handgun calibers limited to the aforementioned list.

As far as the balance of the state, the handgun requirements are not very stringent at all. Outside of the statement: "IT IS UNLAWFUL TO: ... hunt deer or bear with a .22 caliber rimfire firearm" There is no other reference to centerfire handgun in the entire guide. In fact the only other mention of handguns pertains to minimum muzzleloader pistol caliber (40 cal).

In summary, I wouldn't worry so much about ample power for a humane kill. Rather, I'd worry more that the F&G officer might not like the added lethal range of the round.

After all of that, I'd say stick with your 44 magnum. As to what I'd use? A 45 Colt - basically the same thing when loaded in a TC  :D
