Does It Become Second Nature?
« on: September 10, 2005, 06:50:46 AM »
Never having lived where concealed carry is legal I wonder if it becomes second nature to carry concealed like it has with a pocket knife or wallet?

When I use to carry I was always self conscious because I knew I was illegal.

Just curious.

I feel naked if I don't have my gun with me. I always have one either on me or close by.  :D

I never cared if it was 'legal' or not, as I have always carried a gun.
It does seem strange without it.

I carry everywhere I go. Picking up the gun is just like the car keys.

Pistoleer hello, I live in Ky. a cc state, I was going to move to Madison Wi. and do auto repo there, I will not go back to any state that does not allow cc. Wi. has some good laws, but, If I can't defend myself without jail time, I don't need to be there. There were alot of very friendly folk up there, but I felt helpless, I can not stand toe to toe any more, or run, my only real defense is a 45acp.
If I grab my truck keys, my acp is already on my side.

There are but very few places I can not carry, I rarely attend any of those places.  I carry almost 24/7 unless I am asleep, and then the dogs are on duty.

It has gone like this for the past 39 yrs:  Wallet in the pocket, pistol in the belt, knife in the pocket, comb in the other pocket.  Second nature - nope, more like primal instinct.  Mikey.

Its kinda like when you got your first wrist watch it felt strange to put it on and walk around, you felt like something was wrong with your wrist, if you carry everyday all day you will quickly get used to it, and BTW it can save your life the wristwatch can only tell you the time and if its a real expensive watch in the wrong neighborhood you might be glad you had the handgun. :-D  :D    JIM

How do you decide when to carry and when not to?

Its second nature for me anymore...    the only thought I put into it is, which piece to carry for today.   ..depending on clothing, events, weather, 6th sense, etc.

Its better to have and not need it, than to need and not have. Its pretty much like car insurance, when will you need it.  You carry it on your vehicles, not even knowing when the time will come, that you will NEED it because you got into an accident.

According to the laws of your state, they have decided where you can carry... check your state laws out.

Montana Dept of Justice - Conceal Carry

Montana MCA 45-8-315. Definition

No weapons, concealed or otherwise, are allowed in school buildings in Montana, no matter where they are located.

Even with a concealed weapons permit, you may not carry a concealed weapon in the following places:

buildings owned or leased by the federal, state or local government
financial institutions any place where alcoholic beverages are sold, dispensed and consumed.
[/b]

In addition, be sure to check local regulations, which may restrict carrying concealed weapons at public meetings, and in public parks and buildings.

I have had a weapon on me or with me for 45 years or maybe a little longer. That said I am always conscious of it and, not to pick an arguement, will not let it become something I am not conscious of.
I might shoot myownself.

Exactly the point I was trying to make to sherpa who said that he doesn't always carry.

Sherpa, don't be so quick to bet your life on it, I worked for a major security company in Lexington Ky. for a short while. Gated communities are no better than any place else for security, I bet your guards are not making minimum wage, and really don't care who gets in.
Statistics show gated communities are no safer than us regular folk.
be safe, guard yourself and your own.

Sherpa, sounds like you have it well in hand. I personally knew of several gated communities that had quite alot of crime, just because people thought they were safer, and left vehicles unlocked, houses unlocked and so forth.

When I get up in the AM and dress my carry iron is included. If I have to go into a place that fireams are not allowed I place the weapon in my truck dash but leave the holster in place. I place my carry iron on the night stand when I go to bed.

I have to agree. It's amazing to me that people ponder this. I value my life & those of my family. If I walk the 20 yards to the mailbox in my bathrobe my gun is with me. When I go to the store, Drs, church, office, movies, dinner, dentist; I HAVE MY GUN. No ifs, whens, maybes, whatevers; I  HAVE MY GUN! EVERY DAY, EVERY WAY, EVERYWHERE; 24/7.

No matter who you are, where you live or what a great planner you are, you still can't make an appointment for an emergency.  Murphy is alive and well, I never go anywhere without SOME kind of weapon, depending on a constantly-changing set of circumstances.  It might be a knife, a sap, or a gun, but I will have something besides my wits to protect me.  Sometimes my wits are a little dim!
