New Barnett crossbow with questions. Please help!!!!
« on: September 10, 2005, 11:16:58 AM »
My father has very bad shoulders and can no longer pull his bow back.  He's in the process of getting a disabled/crossbow permit for michigan.  He recently purchased a Barnett Rhino Quad limb crossbow.  I'm going to sight it in for him and he'll be practicing for this season.  He's been bowhunting for 40 years but we have no idea about crossbows.  Where should I place mole skin to quiet it down?  Or should I put any period?  I've been reading that 100 grain broadheads are the way to go so I'm going to set him up with my 100 grain Muzzy's.  Also it came with a BSA red dot and arrows.  The arrows look a little cheapo, they are barnett brand, should we purchase easton etc?  Is this crossbow decent for hunting.  He's going to continue hunting 20 yds broadside shots and he hunts mostly from box blinds, again because of his shoulder trouble he really can't climb trees.

The Barnett arrows or bolts are fine I used them when I got my xbow. I make my own now. I doubt if mole skin will quiet anything down but they make silencers for slit limb and solid limb crossbows so check them out. It should be fine for hunting I use a Barnett Ranger Recurve which is the bottom of the line for Barnett and I have killed two deer with it so far so I would think the Rhino would work just fine. Just practice with it and he will do well. Does it have a hand crank on it or are you useing a rope cocker? Either one makes cocking easier but he may find a crank better to use and if the xbow does not have one I would get one for him to use.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

We'll I think I messed up?  I could barely fit the arrows back to the string.  It was so tight back under the sight guard that I had to push really hard to get the arrows back in there.  Once the arrow was back against the string the front of the arrow was probably 1/2" to 1" off the front of the cross bow suspended in the air.  I thought that didn't seem right so I too the rear sight off and filed it enough for the arrow to slide back in without touching the bottom of the sight guard with the top of the arrow.  Now the arrow lies flat along the entire length of the slot for the bottom fletching.  My dad and I cannot get this thing to group at all!  Three shots will be 12" high, the next two will group nice but not where the red dot is.  The next one will be to the right!  It came with a BSA red dot and I don't know what to do?  Did I screw up by filing on it?  Hopefully that's all that's wrong and I can just order another sight guard?

Well I threw in the towel.  Took it to where I bought it and explained everything.  They checked it out and couldn't find anything wrong, decided to exchange it for a Horton Yukon will post results tomorrow.

Good luck. I do not know what to tell you I have the bottom of the line Barnett Recurve and mine shoots fine. I do not know why you had to file anything?? As the arrow holder should be what holds the arrow down on the track and that may have been bent and needed adjusting. This is done by bending it either up or down until the bolt lays flat.  Ihuntbucks uses a Barnett compound here and he has good luck with it. Then and again every company can ship out a lemon. Jim
