Single Shot Muzzleloader Pistols-Good starter??
« on: September 11, 2005, 02:59:48 AM »
I have never owned a muzzleloader pistol, but would like to start off with one in single shot, preferably rifled, but smoothbore would work, as it won`t be for hunting. Could someone suggest a decent starter for me to plink around with? I know that T/C made a sweet one that was discontinued years ago, would that one be nice? It wasn`t the Patriot, it was named something else, and made for hunting as well? Thank you-Jack.

Lyman Plains Pistol is a nice one.  I've had one for years - well made, accurate.  Mid-South Shooters sells them.

Ditto the Lyman.
You could also try www.auctionarms.com for a used one.

Thanks Gents!! Does anyone know what the name of that muzzleloading pistol was that T/C made up to about a few years ago? Was it the Scout pistol or? Thanks-Jack.

I can recall two of them and I believe you named them correctly.  The Patriot and the Scout pistol.  I had a Scout carbine in 50 cal. and a Scout pistol in .54.  That Scout pistol had a frame reminiscent of a lever action and a 12" barrel.  With that big hole in the end, it got everybody's attention!  I never did own a Patriot - sure would like one and regret that I didn't acquire one while they made them.  I believe they were also alvailable in kit form.  I built one of their Hawkens - the results were very satisfying.  By the way, I believe Mike Cumpston has an article in OCT 05 GUNS magazine on the Lyman pistol.  Good luck.

Slayer:

You can still find TC Patriots out there...mostly used but a few NIB pop-up every now and then.  By far the best and most handsome "mass-produced" BP pistol for the money when they were made.  Only problem with them was the stocks were weakened due to the deep cuts to accommodate the lock.  The direction of the wood grain didn't help either...if you shoot one a lot, you're bound to break the stock.  I've broken two stocks and my father two...maybe three now.  I still shot mine (EXTREMLY accurate) after pinning the stock back into place.  Beautiful guns if you take care of them.

I also picked-up a TC Scout off of an auction a while back in .54.  You can load these just like a rifle and boy are they a handful.  It punches BIG holes, makes a LOT of smoke and turns a LOT of heads when it goes off at the range.  It's an in-line set-up with a unique nipple/breach plug...nicely finished and rugged.

My two cents.  Be Safe!  ...Chris   :D

Thanks Chris. It sounds like the Scout is what I am after, big and strong, kinda like my now gone Colt Anaconda .44 mag was, but alas, I am a frontstuffer :D Jack.

The biggest problem with the T/C Patriot is not the stocks, but the fact that the triggers are reversed from every other double trigger gun made. A shooter who has been shooting a Patriot for an hour or so can mistakenly pull the front trigger on another gun while attempting to set the trigger mechanism, causing an AD. This could be particularly true amongst beginning shooters.
