777 in my Omega
« on: September 11, 2005, 10:26:25 AM »
I was trying to get something a little cleaner than Pyrodex, so after not being able to locate any American Pioneer Powder (the company doesn't have dealers in South Florida and were not interested in getting me any powder), I bought some 777. I used the same load (2 50/50 pellets and a 295 gr Powerbelt) as I was using with Pyrodex, and the results were disappointing. Group size doubled, both at 50 yards and at 100 yards, and the crud ring was much worse in my Omega. Groups with the 777 were very erratic with shots flying off from center in every direction. After about 10 shots, I ditched the 777, cleaned the barrel, and went back to Pyrodex. Group size immediately shrunk to the usual, and were centered in the bullseye. I wish it would have worked better. I hate cleaning up Pyrodex. Anyone else have similar results. Maybe it's just my rifle?

I had the same results with 777 pellets when I tried them in my Encore.  Shots were all over the place.  I have been using 777 FF powder for some time with excellent results.  My 100 yard groups with Powerbelt 295's are always around an inch to an inch and a quarter.  I have the 25 ACP breech plug by the way.  Since switching to the 25 ACP system, I've had no trouble with the cursed crud ring.  I am guessing that the 209 primers I had been using had enough power to push the pellets up the bore for erratic and inconsistent ignition.  Try using the powder and give away the pellets.

I have the best results with triple7, either pellets or powder. My gun even shot Pyrodex good. I was using the 209 primers and switched to the 25ACP conversion and no more crud ring and my accuracy improved also, not that it was bad with the 209 primers, I just did not like the crud ring. Now I am happy as can be with triple7 and the 25ACP conversion.  :D  :-D

I'm not familiar with the 25 ACP conversion. Did you get it from T/C? Does it use 25 ACP cases with pistol primers?

They are made by Precision Rifle. I use small rifle primers in mine. You can try small pistol primers to small magnum rifle primers. Here is Precision Rifles web address. Also there is a lot of information on it here if you want to take the time to look or do a search.  :D

Yes the standard .25ACP brass is used and the primer pocket in pistol brass will accept small pistol or small rifle primers as they are the same size. As stated that allows you to try a wide range of primer power all the way from small pistol standard to small rifle magnum which is a lot of different primers to mess with (if you like to experiment this is the greatest). A side advantage that I find is the .25ACP brass is a lot easier to handle when  loading and unloading the primers when hunting. The brass is easier to handle than the smaller 209 shotgun primers. There is enough brass exposed from the breechplug that if one sticks it can be pulled out more easily. It also helps to keep the primer from falling into the action on the Omega which happened to me a couple of times with the 209 primers. When hunting and I get all excited I need all the extra help to run the action that I can muster.

I use 2 777 pellets in my omega with winchester 209 primer and 245 powerbelt. I've been shooting some very tight groups with iron sights. I swab between each shot and have had no problem with Crud rings. best part is when I get home I take the garden hose and flush the barrel out. Recently I tried Remington primers "made for muzzle loaders" and it shot all over the place plus I needed pliers to get the primer out. went back to winchester and it shoots great. every so often I get a "flyer" but it's rare.

Daddy,

If you buy some APP to shoot make sure you get the fffg.  You can buy it thru Cabelas catalog.  I have read many cases of people having horrible accurracy with the 2f, including me.  Although one recent post by Poncaguy suggest he may be doing well with the 2f.

I have yet to try the 3f myself, but it is supposed to be much better.

You should try firing a few primers off to help remove any oil or lube in your barrel, then load it up and fire a shot.  Take one spit patch and swab the barrel so you remove the crud ring and excess foulage.  The barrel is by no means clean, but cleaner.  Put another load in and fire with out adjusting your sights/scope so you see where you are on paper.  After repeating 5 or more times, fully clean the barrel!

Very very rarely will you ever have time to reload for a second shot on a deer, so try it out at the range and see how much better your groupings get.  Bullet and gun mfr's recommend having a slightly fouled barrel when shooting there gun or bullets to enhance accuracy.  Every gun and bullet combo reacts different but try doing the spit patch after every shot and see if that helps.
