mounting a bipod on a G2
« on: September 11, 2005, 11:02:51 AM »
What are my options for mounting a bipod on a G2?  I am headed to South Dakota this fall and plan to use my 7x30 G2 to take at least one deer so I want to increase my odds by adding a bipod.  Also, what length is reommended?

I use a sling stud for the front screw for the forearm, and a Harris bipod.  For bench work I like the shortest available.  For your deer stand you will have to decide what works the best.  I heard all the stories about having to sandbag on the frame, and bipod mounting affecting poi, but this has worked for me on centerfire and rimfire barrels (super 14).  Good luck.

I also use a swivel stud in the forearm to attach a small Harris.  It works out to be a great setup.  Whatever you do, avoid the Harris universal barrel clamp...I tried one of those before using the stud method...very inaccurate.  I couldn't get even remotely mediocre groups with my .222 and the barrel clamp.  So I took it off and it solved the problem immediately.

I also like to use a Pole Cat bipod that doesn't clamp to the gun.  It's great to use for sitting and standing shots.  I highly recommend them if a Harris-style bipod is not an option.

Good Luck
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

Does the swivel stud replace the front screw in the forearm/barrel?  Is this something fairly readily available?

Yes it does.  I bought a sling kit for Contender pistols made by Uncle Mikes and it has one.  Later I found I could get just the stud in a package on the rack of parts (Uncle Mikes) at the gun shop.  I seem to recall I had to shorten it, but I may be wrong.  I use it with the normal washers to float the barrel.  Good luck!
