At what distance have you accurately shot your handi rifle ?
« on: September 11, 2005, 12:06:51 PM »
Hello,
I am curious to hear of someone shooting their Handi rifle at a longer distance than the standard 100 yards. I am lucky enough to have a 500 yard range at my house and we regularly shoot at that distance. So far I have been able to consistantly hit a 6 inch steel plate at 350 yards with my .308 Ultra Hunter. I have found that my rifle really likes the 168 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets propeled with Varget powder. It does not respond well to the old reliable 3031 powder. I am now loading some 100 grain bullets to max load to see if it will group well enough to shoot varmints at long ranges. Thanks.
Dave

I see that this is your first post. so.........Welcome aboard! Pull up a chair and kick up your feet.

Now on to your question. I did get a coyote at about 150 yards with my 223. But thats been the furthest.

Welcome aboard, Dave!! As I recollect, some of the hits at the NEF/H&R Prairie Dog shoot were in the 450yd range....

The farthest I've gotten is about 330paces(just a touch over 300 yds.) off of crossed sticks.  Shooting my .223 at groundhogs.

i too happen to have a 500 yard range in my back yard. i've shot my 40grain load(best in my gun) in my 204 ruger lots of times i used the 32's for the P-dog shoot and got lucky on one at 452.

i've also shot my 308 and 30-06 out to 500 both do ok with the 308 doing good  . i use my deer load in the 308 to shoot  at 500 and in and would feel just fine using it on deer out to about 450.

in my book if a person is capable of one inch groups at 100(which most are with a little help) they are capable of 5 inch at 500 (if all things are perfect) and should shoot at that range all the time. if you shoot at 500 and 600 yards all the time shooting deer and other game at 200 and 300 are a pice of cake.
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

Although I haven't shot at anything living yet, range wise my 223 is just under 1/2 inch at 200 yds. I really had to work on it for a little bit. I used a vise and wait for the wind to almost become still.    Whoever says these guns aren't accurate must live in the dark ages! My 45-70 is 5/8 inch high at 50 yds. and almost dead center at 100yds. with no scope.

whats the exact load data if you'd be so kind as to post. I've got a .308 Ultra Hunter. I had 43.8grs of Varget on Nosler 168 BTs and got 1.012" @100yrds. Whats your 100yrd group?

So far my longest with my 223 is only 300yards on a groundhog, not much to brag about.
I haven't had a chance to really back up my 30-06UltraComp yet, but I have high hopes for it.

So far mine has been at the rams at 500 meters with my 45-70 loaded with black powder. Heck I even hit 3 out of 10 and I am still learning how to load them things right!
