200 grain bullets for Encore 209 x .50?
« on: September 13, 2005, 04:39:41 AM »
I was looking at some T/C 200 grain spire-point Shockwaves at Wal-Mart, and it occurred to me that I've never read about anyone shooting these on this forum.  Is 200 grains considered to be too light for a .50 cal bullet?  It seems that most people are shooting between 250 and 300 grain bullets (for deer) and I was just wondering why.

Wouldn't a 200 grain bullet give you plenty of power to kill a deer, yet travel in a much flatter trajectory than the heavier bullets?

I am using 200 gr Dead Center bullets by Precision Bullets in my Encore.  I called the owner and he suggested the 200's for whitetails.  Last summer I didn't have the time to really work up a load, so I tried the 200's and two Pyrodex pellets I had in my box.  I got 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards and I was happy.  The deer I knocked off her feet with a straight on shot at 50 yards was not so happy.  I also bought some 220 grain DC's, but my groups opened up a bit, but still acceptable.  I had tried some Shockwaves, but I had a terrible time stuffing them down my barrel.  You can buy DC's from Cabelas.  You should also visit the Precision Bullets web site.  Jim

I am using the 195 gr. DC in my 50 cal Encore.  :D  Great on deer. Precision Rifle used them on Caribou also.
