17 Remington again
« on: September 14, 2005, 06:05:31 AM »
I recently posted a question about the recommendation of Remington primers for the 17 Remington.  I had no idea why they were so strongly recommended for this cartridge.  Somebody on another site clued me in that it has to do with primer cup thickness and high pressures generated by the 17 Remington. I was told Federal 205M and CCI 450 primers are of the same thickness.

I went with the CCI primers and loaded up some 25 grain Hornady hollow points.  Several three shot groups with this load are right at 1" center to center.  The largest went 1 1/16".

Knowing how I shoot and being an off the shelf factory rifle I can live with these results.
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

I have some of abt. every brand of primes here now. I might also and that I load for 3 different .17 cal. round, 5 different .22 cal. rounds and several most larger rounds. For case that take small and are .223 or larger I always start load development with Rem. 7 1/2 primers. Most of the time they are the best choice for accuracy, but not always. If your groups are 1 in. or larger I doubt that you need to spend the extra monet for BR primers and your accuracy will probibly be the same with mag. primers, or posibily even standard primers.

You just may be correct.  I went back and checked my group sizes using both the Remington 7 1/2 and the Federal 205M primer.  My groups are a bit smaller with the Remingtons, not a great deal mind you but still smaller.  Best wishes.
