« on: September 14, 2005, 07:13:39 AM »
i have a Rodney Wright  Firehawk that loves heavy arrows.   the one's
supplied when i bought it  average 580gr. with a 160 gr. tip.
my cedar arrows  weigh in at just under 300gr.
i need to find  heavier shafting but have had no luck, any suggestions?

i use aluminum cuz they shoot well out of both my recurve and compound and i cut cost that way.

my 2216s cut at 29" with inserts, knocks and 100 gr tips weigh in at 500 gr on the dot.

if you are not against shooting aluminum from your trad. equip...it might be a good fit.  i can understand wanting to remain with cedar shafts.....i just dont use them for the reason i mentioned above.

The two heaviest shaft materials I have ever used were ramin wood and hickory.  I was able to find 60-70 lb. spine weights in a 5/16" shaft, and with the length at 29 1/4" to back of point, with 125 gr. snuffers, the weights were 620 to 700 grs.!  My bows LOVED them.  Unfortunately that was a decade ago, when I had access to a huge supply of shafting.  I don"t know who would be selling them today.

P.S.  The all time heaviest shaft I ever built in my shop was an 11/32" raminwood shaft that spined 178 lbs. and weighed 850 gr. with a snuffer on board

You can get heavy hickory and other hardwood shafts from Kustom-King and 3 Rivers.

For heavier than that, a lot of guys use Gold Tips that have a weighting system.  I've also heard of guys adding a section of nylon rope inside an aluminum arrow for added weight.
