where to start sighting in 45-70
« on: September 14, 2005, 05:49:16 PM »
I am sure one of you black powder shooters can help me save bullets with this question. I am shooting a Browning BPCR in 45-70 a 457132 lyman cast bullet with 66.5 G (by weight) dropped thru a 30" drop tube toped with a .060 vegatable wad compressed .28 with a compression die.
I took the rifle out last weekend and got it on paper at 25 yds moved my target to 100yds. shot for a group and shot a 1.5" group. I didn't have a target set up at 200 but shot at a hanging gong and shot really low. I ran out of time and am going out Friday. My sight is set at 25 minutes. Can I get a educated guess at how much I need to raise my sight. I am wanting to try to sight in at 200, 300, 400, and 500 I realize my rifle and ammunition will vary but I have no idea where to start. Any one care to take a stab at this one.
thanks, for all the help I have gotten so far, Sparky

Old Sparky,

My Browning 1885 BPCR with factory sights in caliber .45-70 uses the following rear tang sight staff number settings:

Chickens/200 meters....30

Pigs/300 meters...........43

Turkeys/385 meters.....58

Rams/500 meters.........78

The above numbers will get very close to addressing your question.

My standard load is 68.0 grains GOEX Cartridge, .030 LDPE wad and 535 grain bullet.

Powder compression amount is determined by (COL) bullet seating in throat.

Thanks, ShortStake, that post is exactly what I was hopping for. I am sure you will get me close. Your location description under your name cracks me up. I l worked in southern arizona for 22 years and when I was young my dad drove a freight train to lordsburg a couple times a week.
thanks for the help, Sparky

Old Sparky:  With my Browning BPCR and a little zippier load, 72 gr Swiss 1 1/2, here are my come up numpers in yards:   100 to 200 yds  12 MOA;  200 to 300 yds 13.5 MOA;   300 to 400 yds 14 MOA;   400 to 500 yds 15 MOA    These should also be close.   My silhouette nubers in meters are pretty close to Short Stakes also.   Hope this helps steve witt

Thanks for the help guys, I went out to the range today and using shortstakes minutes I was on target at two and three hundred. All I had to do is make small adjustments. Thats all the time I had for today. I sure am excited to try longer distances. This is my first time playing around with this black powder stuff. I shot off the cross sticks I made and shot about a three to four inch group at two and about a five to six inch at three hundred. There is a black powder shoot this weekend and I am hoping to knock over some steel. Should be interesting.
thanks, Sparky
