41 Mag 250gr Cast load
« on: September 15, 2005, 04:24:59 AM »
I am trying to track down a good hunting load using 250 gr Cast performance WFNGC bullet.  None of my manuals list a load for a 250 gr bullet.  I have been loading for 210 gr JHP but wish to try some of these.  The powder I normally use is H110 but am willing to try others. Thanks in advance.

41 Mag 250gr Cast load

I have some 250gr 41's in the mail from Beartooth.  I was going to start with 19gr Lil' gun based on the only load I've found for 250gr in the 41 on handloads.com.

I think I saw a load for H110 out there but didn't make a note of it because I'm out of that powder.

Anyone have a starting load of Blue Dot in the 250 gr 41 Mag?  I know its probably not as well suited for the 250 gr as Lil' gun.

Dick Metcalf did a write-up on the .41 Mag way back in May 1984 for Shooting Times, and did a very considerable write-up on the cartridge, with velocities / goup sizes in 3 guns for about 50 loads, if anyone is interested i'll be happy to fax them the data.....with SSK 275 grain cast bullets, max powder charges shown are:

H110...18 grains
IMR 4227...17.5 grains
2400...18.0 grains
Unique...7.5 grains
W296...15.0 grains

no Blue Dot data is listed, and of course Lil Gun wasnt around back then, but there is still a lot of good info...email me at fyrepowrx@aol.com if you want a copy. For some reason i dont have a .41 at the moment, but after reading that article again i may have to fix that...

In my 10" T/C Custom I can't shoot a 235 gr. cast bullet, it hits the landing and can't close the action. A 215 gr. is the max. it will take. Maybe my throat is to short? >???

Hi BW,

In my .41Magnum Contender, I've used 21grains of H110 for some time now. I haven't ever chrono'ed it yet but figure I'm getting around 1250fps from my 10 inch barrel, maybe a little more. I cast my own 250grWFNGC from water quenched wheelweights with a NEI mold. I've used the same bullet to take elk and elk-sized + game in Africa. It's accurate and works great.
