CZ America in .204, Range report
« on: September 16, 2005, 01:02:51 AM »
I`ve heard so many good things about the CZ`s I though I had to have one. I picked up a pincle barreled 527 with set trigger. Fit and finish is real good, but wood has abt. no figure at all. Adj. triggers and still not happy with them, but I am very picky abt. my triggers and are good hunting triggers.
Cleaned the bore and took it out and shot it. Had some ammo that was loaded for a T/C barrel that was very long throughted and put the bullets into the rifleings, didn`t like it. Had some 32 gn. factory ammo, 3 shot group at .980. Not good, but good enough for a 6 lb. carry gun.
2nd trip out I was loading 32 gn. Hornady and 32 gn. Serria bullets with AA 2230-C powder. Bullets were seated .010 over factory loads, that abt. as long as I can feed through the clip well. Hornady bullets went in at .616 with starting load the got worse and then alittle better as loads were stiffer. Serrias started at .746 and got better as loads got stiffer. The hottest load I tried I got a .645 5 shot group, but the first 4 shots went .190.
I should say that I was useing Rem. brass that was formed from .222 mag. brass and was very tight necked, abt. .002 neck expantion. I used Rem. 7 1/2 primers and loaded ammo on a 550 Dillon.
I have not worked up a load with the 40 gn. bullets yet, but will report back with results.

Took it out again this time with 39 and 40 gn. bullets. I was once again useing AA 2230-C powder and went from 23 gns. to 27 gns. in 1 gn. steeps. The Serria bullets were by far more accurate in my gun than eather the Hornady or the Berger 40 gn. bullets. The 26 gn. load with the Serria bullets wae the only load with Serria bullets that went over 1 moa. It was also the only load that went under 1 moa with the Berger bullets, none went under 1 moa with Hornady bullets. Accuracy really seem to very conistant through the whole range of powder charges. Serrias from just over .800 to just over 1.00. Hornadys from 1.250 to to 2.00 and Bergers from .950 to 1.500.

Pretty good! Were those groups fired using the set trigger?

Catfish, nice work so far on the load development. I guess you see why us 527 owners love these gun so much. 6 pound guns aren't supposed to shoot this good. At least not consistantly, with so many different loads. You would expect such a lightweight to be kind of finicky, but these things shoot just about everything pretty darned good. I personally believe that this is one of the Mauser type action's best qualities. Maybe not the absolutly most accurate, but the most reliable and consistant.

From what I'm hearing a lot of shooters are quite happy with their new CZs.  I've grown pretty disenchanted with Remington lately, and CZ is sounding better all the time.  I want one in a .204Ruger.  I have its big brother, the .222Rem. Mag. which has served me well over the years.  I actually want a Sako in .204 but that's getting out of my price range.  Best wishes.

There just isn't a guy can say bad about them good ole CZ's. I have a 527 in .223 and a 452 in 17 HM2 and will hopefull have a 550 .243 in the next two weeks. If any of you have the 452 then check out the new CZ section for my trigger spring replacement thread, it really makes the 452's trigger very sweet.  :D

I heard my first bad report on the CZ the other day. A friend of mine, that is a BR competor, bought a use CZ, not a 527 but a heaver one, that he could not get to shot under 1 1/2 in groups. He said he thinks that the original owner screwed up the barrel some how, but I don`t know how that could be  :? , anyway I did hear one bad report. Still not bad from what I`ve seen and heard abt most of the other guns on the market. The worst thing I`ve found abt the 527 in .204 is finding one. The demand is still out paseing the supply.

Catfish,

Yeah its hard to say, maybe the barrel had been shot-out, maybe the action screws were way to tight putting a lot of pressure on the barrel or maybe that rifle was just a lemon. Like you said - I think your gonna have bad apples with anything.  I read one guy say that he ordered one through walmart and got it in less than a week. I know my dealer can call up and see if the supplier has them in stock before I lay down my money.
