S&W 500 or 454 Casull ,Which is Better

John C-S, I think the 44 Mag also is a great handgun and will handle the job. But if one choses to use a larger handgun and can handle it as well as any good 44 Mag, them why not?  It is good you know your personal limitations and I respect that, but we deserve the same respect for what we intend to use, weather you agree with it or not.

Now when I go to Maine, if I could get a bear a 1/4 the size of the buffalo, I would be happy. :D

You are right with me. Bear me out as an old guy. A handgun whether scoped or not has its limitations. I do believe a .44 Mag is sufficient under this curtain. I have experimented at the range with around 10 more powerful. These were the Casual the 500 (S/W) and the 480. But my feeling is that what anyone can accomplish with the more powerful chamberings can still be accomplished with the .44 Mag. In the handgun realm. Not as powerful, but powerful enough. I do know what a .44 Mag Six Gun can do out to 100 yards. That is my handgun limit. Beyond, a handy 7 shot carbine is really easier and better in a 30-30 or .35. That is my opinion. And I do think the single shot hand rifles and 5 shot boat anchor pistols are trying to accomplish what a simple 1894 Lever (or 336) could do a hell of a lot better. And my game deserves that. I suppose someday a company will come along and declare a .50 BMG as their ultimate handgun. I stop at the .44 Magnum and wonder at this unfulfilled need to go beyond, in the hunting handgun.

Every thing you say now was said years ago when the 357 Mag came out, then again when the 44 Mag came out.  You are not stating anything other's long ago thought about the gun you have such high regard for, the 44 Mag. It is just the American way, (Bigger & better).  But I don't think I really have anything more of value to add to this topic. This horse is beat to death.  :D

My first centerfire handgun was a .357mag ( 4 inch security six) my second one was a new model super black hawk .44 mag.  The moment I fired the .44 I gave that .357 "cap pistol" to my wife.  Later on I aquired a Taurus Raging bull .454. real fun to shoot and when I go to the range I take both of the "hand cannons".  From a shooters point of view I'd love to try a 500 S&W, I can honestly say I don't think I need or want one. Now the .460 S&W on the other hand ......

As to which is better .....  You have to hit what your shooting at ( where your shooting at it) I doubt the dead animal will really care.
