Tear one what apart?  Coyote, 'chuck, 'dog, 'cat, gray digger?   I haven't shot a factory round which would not tear any small animal apart.  You'll "probably" have to handload the .22-250 down to .223 velocity or less and use special bullets to obtain that performance on the smaller varmints.

If you are worried about pelts, I reload 53 grain Barnes X (XLC with the blue coating) bullets in my .220 Swift at about 3800 fps.   It enters and exits without much drama.  I think you can buy Black Hills with X-bullets loaded in it...but Barnes are not usually factory loaded.  You can also buy 45 grain XLCs,  but also 50 grain X_bullets without the coating 53 grain tiple shocks and 70 grain triple shocks.  I wouldn't recommend 70 grainers with your factory barrel.  The 45 grainers are really cool.  These bullets are solid copper so they don't blow up like a varmint round, but you also pay for a solid copper bullet.  Barnes also has a varmint round (the Barnes Burners Varminators), but don't like them as much as V-maxs (Not as accurate in my gun).  Anyway,   If you use V-MAXs, Ballistic Tips, Ballistic Sivertips, Calhoun double hollow points, etc., etc.  the hide wan't be worth anything.  I suggest going the Barnes route (X-bullet or Triple Shock...it dosen't matter), or buying another caliber...if my .220 dosen't tear up hides with an X-Bullet, your .22-250 ain't.  If you are really serious about hides, though...I would suggest trapping.

I don`t think you`ll find anny bullet that won`t do alot of damage to fox or Bob cats. If you have a 12 ga. shotgun I would recomand you use it with #2`s or BB.

Hi try a soft point lead bullet. Like a Remington core lort load. But the 22 250 is going to make a hole. Unles you shoot a FMJ bullet. Try a 40gr BT or v-maxs a freind said they would make a exit hole. I dont know i have loaded some for a 223 But yet to group them to see how they do. VM

You should have gotten a 204 if your concerned about holes.

A bit to much power for the little fellows. The standard soft points will usually exit golf ball size on a coyote and up to baseball sized on a fragile cat. You may want to look into black hills ammo, I know they were loading bearclaws in 223, maybee they are loading a thick jacketed bullet for the 22-250. The fellow that suggested the 40 gr vmax (Hornady Varmint Express) may have an idea. I have used the 55 gr on cats and had a messy end. The 40 may be small enough to not punch through. I know from experience the fmj round works poorly on coyote, and I assume you will be hunting for all three types at the same time. Generally I only use the 22-250 when I expect shots to be over 300 yards, on the small fellows I try to shoot a front to back shot instead of broadside. About a quarte of the time I still ruin the hide. Good Luck

Barnes 40gr VLC's or the 40gr Varmitathor is what I used with the 22-250, but for cats and foxes all you will get is a mess.  I am moving down to a 17 remington to fix that problem.  Larry

I have a Ruger #1 in 22-250 and it is absolutely the best shooting rifle and cartridge I have ever used on varmints. I shoot prairie dogs, yotes, and bobcats with 2 loads and both do well. One is 38 grains of H380 with Magnum primers with a 50 gr Hornady BT and use the same H380, 38 grs with a 55 gr Remmington corelockHP. They are accurate and deadly. Steve48

Factory ammo + a .22-250 = ruined hides on even large Coyotes.  The .22-250 isn't considered to be a "pelt friendly" factory cartridge by fur hunters.  Takes reloading to be able to load it down and save hides.  Sorry.  Lawdog
