Is 338 Win Mag Enough for Namibia
« on: September 16, 2005, 06:48:17 PM »
I may be going to Namibia hunting. I would like to kill an oryx, elan, wart hog, and a black wildebeest. What is the consensus here on the adequacy of a 338 Win Mag for these animals.
A great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.

The shots are going to be very long there. There are also no indiginous black wildebeast so if your hunting them then it's a put and take property which being fully enclosed may reduce the distnace you shoot.

If you are reasonably proficient with your .338, and use good quality bullets, there is nothing you have mentioned that the .338 will not handle admirably out to 300 yds. or beyond with good shot placement!

This cartridge, IMHO, is one of the finest large game rounds ever devised.

Shoot with confidence!

That will depend on where you're at.  I just got back from hunting the area just south of Etosha and the longest shot I contemplated taking was about 150 yards.  The kudu I ended up taking was at 45 yards.  I belly crawled through the grass for about 40 yards to get that close, but the max I could have shot from was about 75 yards.  I found the area very brushy and the animals tended to hang in the mopane thickets rather than out in the open.  All the farms in that area were "fully enclosed", but at 15,000 to 25,000 acres each there's still plenty of room for a long shot if you can see through the brush that far.  I'm told that the farms in the southern part of the country are way bigger with less brush so that's where you may get your "very long" shots.  I used my .450 Marlin bolt gun, but my guide used nothing more than a 30-06.  I can email you a couple of photos of the area I hunted in if you'd like to get a look at it.
