Help needed for Rem. and Hornady 44 Mag. loads.
« on: September 17, 2005, 12:11:27 PM »
This is my question.  I have both Remington 240 gr. SJHP and Hornady 240 gr. XTP factory loads.  I plan on making the Hornady my primary hunting load and sight in my Ruger RH at 75-100 yards with this load.  I have a lot of the Remington loads also.  My question is this.  Are the ballistics of the two loads similar?  I want to used the remington as my practice loads.  Is the recoil similar and will the Remington pattern in about the same area as the Hornady?  All help and suggestions are greatly needed.  Thanks.

To best way to get the answer to your question, would be to sight in your gun with the load you intend to use for hunting. Then shoot the other to see how it patterns compared to your hunting load. Don't make adjustments to your sights if the practice loads do not hit the same point of impact. I make it a point to shoot the same loads for practice as I do for hunting. :D

If you use the same powder charge in both recoil will be the same. No one but your gun can answer the rest of your questions. The groups with two different bullets of same weight can be similar or there can be vast differences and same with the point of impact of them. Only shooting can tell you.

But my personal experience says they should be pretty close on POI most of the time. Groups? Well I've never gotten as good accuracy from the RP bullets as XTPs in .44 mag.

If the Remington shoot well in your gun I would use them for deer. I have found them to expand alot better than the Hornady XTP`s. For hogs or heaver skinned game I would use the Hornadys. In my oppenion the best deer bullet on the market for deer is the Serria 240 gn. JHC`s. If you don`t reload I would go with the Rem`s.

Point of impact changes

I will bet the POA will change significantly. At least that would be my luck.
I think you will have to decide which one you want to shoot set up your gun for that load, then try the next load. Maybe you will get lucky and it will hit the same place.

All you can do is try.
