encore 45-70
« on: September 17, 2005, 12:41:01 PM »
I have been looking for a load for my new 15 inch non ported 45-70 encore barrel.
due to the limited powder around me the choice is  not real big, I know this may not be an ideal load but I have to do what I have to do
what I have come up with is:
lee 405 .450 cast bullets with Lyman #2 lead.
Winchester cases primed with CCI L.R.
IMR 4895 powder weight is 54.0.
This load is maximum load listed for the 1886 winchester.

What is everyone else using? could I / should I move up the the data for the Ruger rifles?
what do you think the recoil will be like?

I've used almost that much H4895 with a 550 gr cast in my encore but it is an old NEI design that looks similar to the lyman 545 grainer.  I seated it out till it touched the lands. Anyway that load your quoting should be more than safe and plenty powerful.
Also I have used AA2015 with the 500 gr hornady around 1600 fps.
At those levels you will find recoil something to behold.  Everything else will seem tame.
Remember JD Jones used the 45/70 contender with 400 gr at 1600 and the 500 at 1400 to kill some awfully big game.  Do you need that much?

I figured if it was safe in an old rifle it would be more then safe in an Encore. the reason I am using the 405 gr cast bullets is I was given the mold. when I bought this barrel it came with about 100 loaded round of 300 gr Remington H.P. bullets When I fired a few of these it was a good handful but not real bad. So I am thinking the 405 are gona be bad. I have a rubber grip on my frame so it should take some bite out of it. :?

as for do I need all that power, sure do we grow some very big deer around me and man are they mean :D

this is mostly gona be a paper punching barrel until I can get MD. to change the hunting regs, and I am working hard on this.
