I have some aluminum stock in various thickness, was wondering
if aluminum would be a good shimming stock since it is sofetr than
brass and stainless?

If you are shimming engine rod or main bearings I would say no, as they won't last. If you are shimming a scope ring I'd say yes.  

As to me leaving if you flush, the answer is yes; if you can reach up to pull the handle  :D

In this application, I see no reason that aluminum wouldn't work just as well as brass........

We have been cutting small strips from Coke cans and have had no problems.
