old S&W handgun
« on: September 19, 2005, 02:48:08 AM »
An old handgun has just come into my possesion.  It is a 5 shot .38, breaktop, with pearl grips, nickel finish.  The SN is 124631.  the gun seems tight and in about 70% finish on the nickel.  It's a Smith, and I think it was made before 1899.  Can anybody help me out, and give me an idea what it is worth?

Is the gun single or double action , does it have any other information stamped on it, you need to provide more information. Smith & Wesson made top break .38 S&W revolvers from the 1880's till the 1940's, all different models.

As much information as you can find on the gun -Blue or nickle, length of barrel, etc.

Mad dog:  You probably have a .38 double action third model, 207,700 mfg. 1884-1895 serial # range 119,001-322,700, 70% value in the blue book is $175, however you may find it will bring more to S&W collectors.  HTH  :D    JIM
