MB- If you are just looking to get something new/different, getting a new rifle might well be cheaper, easier, and well let's face it, buying a new rifle is almost as fun as shooting. If you are looking at a custom rig, that is a different story and cost is less of an issue than getting exactly what you want.
The Savage rifles are quite viable for rebarreling to different calibers with the barrel nut and aftermarket barrels (such as Adams & Bennet) and some shooters have multiple barrels for the same action. Blued barrels and tools run about $250 or so (I thought about converting my 30-06 to a 35 Whelen). Rebarreling is another option and most non- Savage rifles typically involve starting with a barrel in the white ($400 or so), threading the chamber std, fitting, headspace check and so on to rebarrel and this can get pretty pricey (for me anyway). Even with reaming an existing barrel to a larger size, you have to factor in the cost of reaming the barrel and consider what case is compatible with the extractor on the existing bolt.
