Looking for some advice on moose loads
« on: February 27, 2003, 01:49:55 PM »
I'm going on a moose hunt this fall in Newfoundland and am looking for advice on the best factory load for a weatherby 270. The choices seem to be narrowed down to the Nosler partition and swift A-Frame in 150gr
Anyone have a strong opinion to offer?

Daveo,

My load is an oldie but it works an it is accurate.  Under an inch out of my Deluxe.

73.0 gr. of IMR-7828, 3,315 fps. using Nosler 150 gr. Partition

Hope this is what you're looking for.  Lawdog

Daveco what part of Newfoundland will you be hunting? I live on the west coast of the island near Stephenville, where  the Earnest Harmon US Airforce Base was located until 1966. I hunt moose with a Rem 7MM Mag. using Federal 160gr Nosler Partions. Never had a problem. so you should have good results with your Weatherby .270 using 150gr Noslers.  A well placed shot just behind the front shoulder and it's all over.

Daveo,

As for factory loads, you can't do much better than the 150 Noslers Partitions and 150 Swift-A-Frames you mentioned (although I must admit that I did not know that someone made the A-frames in the 270 Wby Mag).

The only other factory ammo that I would recommend is Weatherby's 140 Barnes X, and Federal's Premium Trophy Bonded which, I think, is available either in 140 or 150 grain.

It's a shame no one makes 160 grain ammo for the 270 Wby because its sectional density would be great.

Thanks Zachary, the A-Frames are available from Colley Precision Cartrage, so far that is the only place I've found.
Jim-Y, I'll be hunting areas 03 or 39 with Patey and Sons outfitters. Got excellent references from reliable sources, repeat hunters.

Daveo,

I think that you meant "Conley."  I have spoken with Cole who is the owner - really nice fella.

I have also spoken with  quite a few people (mostly from forums) that have purchased ammo from him, and everyone has had good experience.

That 150 Swift-A-Frame would be just deadly on moose.  Then again, so too would be the Trophy Bonded.  Check with Federal's website and see if they offer it in the 150 TB.  If they do, and if your particular rifle likes it, then that bullet will be awesome.

Daveo, you will be hunting the northern part of the island. It is in a remote location called Habour Deep. I have a friend that guides in that area and he told me that there are some big moose. Hope you have a great hunt.
