What is the general opinion of the 6.5TCU?  It's between this and a 300 Whisper.  I am looking for a low recoil round that will punch one hole groups @ 100 yds.

If that is the sole criteria, I'd go with a 22 K hornet or 221 fireball.

The 300 whisper in an SSK barrel is an extemely accurate barrel, definately capable of 1 hole 100yd groups.

As far as T/C barrells, I'd expect similar accuracy from the 6.5 TCU and the 300 whisper.  The advantage of the whisper is the larger choice of factory bullets in 30 cal.

Well bob, there is no magical round that will punch one hole at 100yds. Not that a 6.5 isn't capable of that kind of accuracy. There are just many more variables that go into it than just caliber. Quality of barrel, action, optics, ammo, and we havn't even got to the shooter yet. 6.5 seems to have a pretty good reputation and would probably do just fine. But so would a barrel full of other calibers. I'd say pick the one that interests you most and go to work with it. For what its worth I have a bunch of Contender and Encore barrels and the only PISTOL I have ever punched one hole groups at 100yds with is a 17HMR. And that was an exceptional day, not the norm. Don't set your expectations too high, any thing under 1" is good. Any thing under 1/2" is great. When you hear people talking of one hole 100yd groups, most are refering to the best they have gotten and not the average they get. Shoot, if it was that easy it wouldn't be any fun. I'm sure there will be some posts come in hollering that they get one holers all the time, And they just might, but unless I see it I'll just take it with a grain of salt and go on. That kind of accuracy just isn't that easy.  Just my $.02    KN

I agree with KN. Handgunners are already at a huge disadvantage. Scopes, sight radius, barrel steadiness, etc. I have seen very few gunners honestly shooting, honest 100 3 or 5 shot groups that are under 1/2". There are many under 1" but to do it with a TC on a regualr basis is something to be proud of. I have done it, but more often than not the groups are 1- 1 1/2"--BUT I am shooting hunting velocity 223, 308, 30'06 etc, with the 223 regularly under the 1" mark, but not under the 1/2". I had a 6.5TCU and loved it. It shot 1" groups all day long with Sierra 100gr and 4227 powder. Always strive for the tinyest, but be realistic.

I guess it would depend on what I already own. I have a 7mm TCU, so a 6.5 TCU probably wouldnt interest me much. But a 6mm TCU or a 300 Whisper could be interesting. One holers are beyond my abilities. Purely for good target rounds though , looking for that perfect one hole group, I think I would consider something like a 22PPC, 6mm BR, 6mm PPC. Based only on your original choices, my opinion would be, go with the 300 whisper, but I think I would get the SSK barrel with 1 in 8" twist.

the same choices a couple of years ago I went with the 300 Whisper.  I wanted a round that was satisfactory for whitetails and coyotes..that recoiled mildly, as was known to be accurate.  After some research,talking with J.D.Jones and e-mails with some of the guys on GBO made the decision to run with the 300 Whisper.  I wanted to load deer loads in the 125 to 135 grain range..so getting the tighter 1in 8 inch twist wasn't necessary..so I saved myself $100 and went with the T/C Custom Shop.  If I were interested in subsonic heavier bullet loads I would have went with SSK.  My barrel handles every weight from the 90 XTP's to the 165 Nosler BT's with more accuracy to I can do just justice.  I want to get a 6.5 TCU someday,cause I just a passion for those long legged 6.5 bullets,but wanted to go with the .300 first.  and I don't regret it.  Probably will never let that barrel go. :grin:
