cracked stock on SKS
« on: September 20, 2005, 02:00:22 PM »
My rifle has a narrow but not hairline crack on the top of the neck of the stock directly behind the receiver cover. The crack is about 1 1/4 inch long and parallels the grain. It extends into the inletting at the rear of the action about 1/4 inch from the surface of the stock. It has become more apparent the more cosmoline I remove.

Can someone offerr suggestion on repair? I planned to kep the stock finish original, but can refinish if necessary. TNX

You could use stainable wood filler then solar lux stain and it should blend it in.

I have seen some military gun stocks repaired with using dowels and glue then sand them flush with the stock.  I use gorrilla glue if the stock is clean and dry of oils.
